Senior Underwriter Duties: Provide guidance and solutions for complex title insurance issues and real estate transactions. Develop Company underwriting policies and procedures. Respond to inquiries from state and regional counsel, direct operations, independent agents, and customers (including attorneys and lending institutions, such as banks, savings and loans, and mortgage bankers, etc.) relating to National underwriting issues. Analyze transactions and provide guidance for resolving title problems. Review and approve high liability, extra-hazardous risk and reinsurance submissions. Draft commitment requirements, policy exceptions and affirmative insurance. Assist in developing, formulating and implementing company policies and guidelines relating to title insurance underwriting and related matters. Develop and oversee the form and content of utilized underwriting software, including reviewing, writing and editing Bulletins and other submissions and changes to VU. Participate in the development of new products, policies, endorsements and forms. Develop and maintain a working knowledge of underwriting standards. Assist, as requested, National Claims Counsel and field customer service representatives in the initial review of and formulation of underwriting strategy regarding claims resolution. Prepare and participate in educational programs sponsored by Stewart Legal Services and/or other programs. Assist in the overall management of Stewart’s national underwriting system. Handle other matters as assigned by senior management.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Completion of an undergraduate degree in Business Management. Completion of an graduate degree in Law from an ABA accredited law school is a plus. 8 + years of experience in in real estate and title insurance which includes experience in negotiation. Good verbal and written communication skills. Preferable experience includes title insurance background and/or experience in real estate transactions. Skills in internet legal research and software are helpful.
