Associate General Counsel, Real Estate / Corporate Counsel Duties: Advise executive management and business clients regarding proactive compliance with all requirements in the area of transactional contracts and real estate. Advise and partner with business clients regarding real estate matters including, but not limited to, contracts, leases, estoppels, easements, title and survey review, site development, and compliance issues affecting the company’s real property and its vendors, government agencies or other third parties. Manage real estate practice group within established budgetary constraints. Handle compliance and regulatory reporting in identified practice area. Represent the company in negotiations, hearings, and other forums. Develop strong partnership with executive management, senior management from other corporate departments, distribution centers, stores and their vendors. Represent the Legal and Real Estate/Construction departments and Academy on enterprise-level issues both internally and externally. Partner with business clients to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, gather and analyze information skillfully and maintains confidentiality. Prepare annual budget submissions for real estate practice area. Develop standardized processes and procedures for the organization in identified practice area. Hire and manage outside counsel to represent Academy in legal matters. Oversee regulatory and compliance programs in identified practice area. Manage legal staff, including legal and administrative assistants. Oversee the financial budget for assigned areas. Cross train in other legal matters, including litigation, intellectual property, employment and transactional work. Identify and develop projects spanning other corporate departments, distribution centers, stores and their vendors. Identify and implement growth strategies and process improvements across multiple areas. Assist in review and management of site selection and development procedures. Delegation of duties as appropriate. Develop a thorough understanding of Academy’s policies, procedures and safety rules.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: JD Degree.

For a senior position, 10+ years of experience with a major law firm or an in-house legal department.

For a junior position, 5+ years of experience with a major law firm or an in-house legal department.

Experience with a retail company $1+ billion in revenue preferred. Significant experience with commercial real estate acquisition and development, from letter of intent through negotiation of purchase and sale agreements and leases, closing and project opening, providing advice, legal analysis, and transaction leadership and support. Integral part of transaction process where business judgment is as important as legal guidance. Experience includes managing and resolving real estate related legal issues with open and operating retail stores, and generally managing all legal issues of a real estate portfolio. High level of professionalism, good judgment and initiative. Ability to work well under pressure while consistently meeting time sensitive deadlines. Ability to remain organized, pay attention to detail, and meet critical deadlines. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to work well independently, as well as effectively contribute to a team environment. Analytical with strong problem-solving abilities and creative resolution skills. Ability to manage a team, both internally and externally. Strong supervisory, coaching, and training skills. Strong leadership ability and conflict resolution skills. Strategic planning skills.
