Associate General Counsel Duties: Will report to the Senior Director and Associate General Counsel, Insurance and be a member of an insurance law practice group that is responsible for a broad range of insurance law matters relating to the sound and prudent business operations of company. Specific responsibilities include: Provide legal advice for the design, implementation, distribution and administration of annuity and insurance products and services including fixed and variable annuities and life insurance (individual and group, tax non-qualified and qualified) and funding agreements (529 plans, stable value). Provide legal advice and support for insurer compliance with certain insurer corporate reporting requirements and for responses to inquiries from state and federal regulators. Provide legal advice and support for a captive insurance agency that distributes third-party products, and to other affiliated entities distributing insurance products (broker dealers, trust company). Provide legal advice and support for SEC registration and state separate account compliance of individual annuity and life products. Provide other services as needed to the insurance law practice group and the larger retirement and individual services law group.
Qualification and Experience
Qualification Requirements: Law degree and 7+ years’ experience in life insurance industry as part of a law firm insurance practice group and/or insurance company. Experience with both fixed and variable annuity and life insurance products is required. Knowledge and experience with insurance, securities and tax regulations, rules and filing requirements impacting annuity and life insurance products, including annuity contracts that fund retirement plans. Experience dealing with insurance operational requirements. Experience interacting with Insurance Department regulators and IRS and DOL. In-depth knowledge of relevant insurance laws as well as working knowledge of relevant securities regulations is required. Experience within a financial services, Pension / ERISA Experience with and knowledge of Internal Revenue Code, ERISA and related regulations and issues impacting 403(b) plans, 401(a) plans, 401(k) plans, 457(b) plans and 457(f) plans environment not required, but considered a plus. Ability to research insurance laws and regulations, circular letters, OGC opinions and relevant case law, and ability to interpret and apply same. Familiarity with standards for dealing with claims and complaints. Strong communication, writing, research and negotiation skills. Ability to work well under pressure, meets agreed-upon deadlines, and manages multiple tasks concurrently. Ability to work independently and in collaborative team environment.
