Senior Counsel, IP Litigation Duties: Independently manage legal work relating to assigned projects; Facilitate the ability of relevant business areas to achieve their objectives; Optimize the legal position of assigned business areas in all of their endeavors; Manage legal risk appropriately, with assistance as appropriate from the Deputy General Counsel. Act as a role model to other legal staff and demonstrate leadership within the client teams and legal teams in which operates. Direct impact on business activities with significant or very high reputational and financial value and risk to the business. Responsible for personally handling complex and business-critical legal work in the assigned area. Providing efficient, value-adding and proactive legal advice in the assigned area in order to mitigate present and potential future risk and exposure. Stay abreast of legal implications of developing external trends and develop a “big picture” perspective. Be a leader amongst AstraZeneca senior management and departmental colleagues, and a Legal business partner to senior clients. Maintain focus on AstraZeneca’s business priorities, including during periods of sustained pressure. Demonstrate commitment to the Company's objectives and values. Actively seek to improve existing ways of working. Develop and implement cost-efficient legal strategies and policies in the assigned area consistent with stakeholder expectations. Where appropriate, oversee the establishment of appropriate budgets for internal and external costs and ensure that such costs are delivered within acceptable budget variances. Develop and implement initiates to reduce and control the expenditure of external legal costs in a prudent manner. Identify the need for and maintain appropriate collaborations with other Legal support areas to ensure a seamless global service to clients. Identify and manage legal projects arising in the assigned area to support business priorities and need. Educate and train clients in the assigned area on important legal issues relative to their area of responsibility. Support and mentor other lawyers handling work in the assigned areas, and in the Legal Department generally. Select, assign, oversee and evaluate the work of external counsel, representing substantial level of fees, to ensure delivery of the appropriate level of service. Handle special projects assigned by the Deputy General Counsel. Responsible for developing and drive IP litigation strategies. Effectively influencing and negotiating with internal and external stakeholders. Developing and adhering to litigation-related risk-reduction controls. Managing outside counsel, vendors and related costs, making authoritative decisions and monitoring external fees. Sharing expertise with colleagues to deliver measurable business benefits.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Law degree and, preferably, a degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, immunology or a related discipline. Professional legal qualifications. 5+ years' relevant patent litigation experience in legal department of corporation or major law firm, preferably with significant pharmaceutical patent litigation experience. Strong negotiation and counselling skills, and the ability to influence a wide range of stakeholders. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and experience in effectively working on and collaborating with business teams with ability and willingness to develop these skills further. Demonstrated evidence of professional maturity and judgment. Proven record of analysing complex legal problems, delivering effective solutions and dealing effectively with clients and third parties. The confidence to communicate strategic vision, motivate colleagues and promote a positive working environment. Self-awareness and ability to articulate legal issues and considerations and effectively provide advice to business clients.
