Assistant Dean of Career Services - Law School Duties: Contribute to the strategic pursuits of the Career Services Office’s (CSO) programming, employer outreach and employment data management efforts. Work with Associate Dean to develop strategic plans to increase traditional and/or non-traditional employment opportunities of law graduates in private and public sectors across the nation, in accordance with the ABA standards, Fowler School of Law’s goals and policies and the university’s missions and policies. Regularly monitor and report progress. Establish short- and long-term goals, outline objectives, develop policies, and prepare operating procedures for the office. Evaluate operational success level and initiate changes for improvement as necessary. Work closely with existing employer contacts and cultivate new prospective employers with innovative and engaging methods, including but not limited to coordinating joint programs with student leaders, alumni, faculty, bar associations, legal recruiters, and legal recruiter organizations. Direct the collection, verification, and reporting of student/graduate employment data for external organizations such as the ABA, NALP, and others, as well as producing internal reports on employment statistics. Oversee the administration and implementation of the Fall and Spring OCI and Resume Collection Programs and increase student participation in these programs. Represent the CSO at senior staff meetings, faculty meetings, and Dean’s Board of Advisors meetings. Work with Assistant and Associate Directors to create/grow successful job search development programs as well as mentoring and mock interview programs. Oversee the administration and implementation of JD students’ involvement in fall and spring on-campus interview programs, career conferences, and job fairs. Ensure success in the administration of the Professional Development Graduation Requirement. Oversee the maintenance and enhancement of resources for Career Services’ reference library of publications regarding various types of employment and areas of practice, periodicals, journals, and directories. Work collaboratively with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Administration, the Dean, the Assistant Dean of Admissions, the Externship Director, and other senior staff members to improve the school’s ranking and move forward strategic goals. Participate as a presenter in the annual orientation for new students organized by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Administration. As required, represent the law school at local, regional and national meetings and conferences including the National Association for Law Placement, Los Angeles Area Legal Recruiters Association, Orange County Legal Recruiters Association, local inns of court, and bar association events. Collaborate with the Communications and Marketing Office to provide strategic direction and oversight of programming and marketing materials as well as the office’s web contents Co-create curriculum and teach resume/cover letter writing course within the Professional Development Graduation Requirement training program. Review and evaluate all class assignments with other staff members. Provide leadership to the Law Career Services team and engage them in the development and implementation of programs; building and enhancing extensive outreach efforts; and ensuring accurate data collection, analyses and reporting. Direct the interviewing, evaluating, and selecting candidates for CSO staff and administrator positions. Provide direction, training and development of staff. Manage departmental budget and prioritize resources. Counsel students in the JD, JD/MBA, and LL.M. programs and alumni about job searching strategies and career development in traditional and non-traditional legal careers, externships, and internships. Collaborate with Assistant/Associate Directors to develop extensive written career materials for students, including information on areas of practice, alternative careers, public interest, government careers, and resume guides, among others. Review and provide feedback on student resumes, conduct mock interviews, and otherwise assist students on an individual basis to enter the job market. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: A Juris Doctor degree and Bar license from any state. 5-7 years of experience in a law school career services office, law firm, or other legal work setting with demonstrated successful record of job attainment. Career counseling experience desired. Substantial understanding of the Southern California legal job market with proven experience in growing employer contacts and translating them into employment opportunities. Current knowledge of and the ability to remain abreast of employment trends in general and in particular of the legal market locally, nationally, and globally in both traditional and non-traditional employment, to counsel students and alumni on their professional goals in a changing legal marketplace. Strong organizational and time management skills, ability to multi-task and balance competing priorities are essential. Proven ability to develop, plan, and apply guidelines and procedures. Demonstrated effective oral, inter-personal, and written communication skills, and the ability to innovate and problem-solve. Demonstrated customer service focus and skills. Demonstrated ability to interact positively with and enjoy meeting a wide range of people to increase student engagement and foster relationships in the legal community. Constituents include students, alumni, faculty, law school and University administrators, employers, and media. Demonstrated leadership skills and experience in working together with other team members to devise, analyze, modify, implement and evaluate programs, materials, procedures and etc. Strong commitment to the concept of teamwork, with the ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and use discretion in matters pertaining to all aspects of office management and student/alumni communication. Ability to travel and work occasional Saturdays and evening hours as required. Strong computer skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, internet and electronic mail software, preferably of Microsoft Office Suite. Technical ability to learn and use enterprise software. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and demonstrate tact and diplomacy. Demonstrated skill in project and budget management.
