Essential Functions

 

  • Management of multi-lawyer underwriting team
  • Provides underwriting support, counsel, and authorization agents, customer(s), and company personnel related to the issuance of real estate title insurance commitments and policies for transactions involving Massachusetts real estate.
  • Utilizes underwriting standards and guidelines within delegated authority limits, to underwrite the issuance of title insurance, and works with appropriate company personnel to develop appropriate standards and guidelines to underwrite the issuance of title insurance in accordance with company processes
  • Develops and maintains effective business relationships with agents as well as internal and other external clients in order to attract, develop and retain profitable business for the Area
  • Initiate, relate and manage the communication of information related to underwriting and real estate settlement services from superiors to subordinates, to agents and other industry colleagues.
  • Responsible for the state underwriting team’s proper monitoring of state law and recommending to superiors practice changes as required, and initiating same in accordance with company processes.
  • Collaborates with regional underwriting staff in underwriting initiatives around product development and corporate risk management.
  • Analyzes key metrics of underwriters to identify areas of improvement and development opportunities

  • Operates with latitude for un- reviewed action or decision and has ability to evaluate matters which may have a major bearing on the conduct of the organization’s business.

  • Work independently setting own priorities and objectives with supervisory consultation. Work reviewed for soundness of judgment and overall accuracy.
  • Has specialized expertise for making recommendations to and in collaboration with senior management and/or legal.
  • Requests or issues that are above scope of responsibility and approval limits are referred next level underwriter.
  • Has supervision responsibility of multi-lawyer underwriting team and must act in a lead capacity providing mentorship and leadership within assigned area.

Knowledge and Skills/Technology Used

 

  • Excellent understanding of concepts, practices and procedures of real estate titles and closing, involving both simple and complex real estate transactions.
  • Strong knowledge of Federal and State regulations related to real estate title insurance and settlement services.
  • Ability to lead others in effectively implementing programs and projects and to exercise good judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills.
  • Ability to diagnose and analyze problems, identify and drive appropriate solutions and, achieve desired results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi- task, prioritize and work under pressure.
  • Ability to build relationships and create rapport and collaborate with others throughout the corporate structure, including but not limited to sales staff, corporate underwriting, claims, human resources, and other operational divisions of the company.
  • Requires abstract thinking and creative solutions.
  • Ability to ‘think outside the box’ and make unique yet sound decisions to resolve complex issues.

Typical Education

  • Law Degree required.
  • Admitted to practice in state of employment.

Typical Range of Experience

  • 10-12+ years title underwriting or related transactional experience, and experience managing peers.
  • Must be familiar with real estate law
