Tax Attorney Job Description
A tax attorney handles complex technical and legal issues and specializes in the field of tax law (taxation of corporate and personal income and real or personal property acquired through personal and professional efforts). The attorney establishes a link between the taxpayer and the Government and assists with advice, audit and protection from fines, among other tasks. In addition to income tax, there are employment tax, excise tax, sales tax, gift tax, inheritance tax, capital gains tax, property tax and many other areas of taxation. Tax Attorneys generally focus only on tax issues and relief. Duties include: audit, reducing fines, removing liens, and navigating through the minefield of small business and self-employment tax issues. They hold a position equivalent to accountants. Their main aim is to help head off tax problems before they even begin. Ability to spot troubles for a business and providing advise to avoid them are key essentials.
Keeping updated with the latest changes in the tax structure is very important for the tax attorneys to succeed. A tax attorney should have a J.D. degree and be admitted to a State Bar. Must be licensed by a State Board of Law Examiners. Should have advanced training in tax law. A Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in taxation would be an asset. Some tax attorneys also have a background in accounting. Strong experience dealing with the IRS, debt management cases, and working with real live taxpayers is always welcome. Excellent negotiating skills and good interaction skills with clients are required. Important abilities such as meticulous planning and judicious communication are very important for the success of any attorney. Detailed familiarity with all the concerned laws, a good financial mindset and the ability to negotiate hard bargains and deals with the opposite party are some of the needed qualities.
