One Vanderbilt University Law School student paid $1,000 for the privilege when he made the winning bid to be ''Dean for a Day,'' one of the more high-profile items at the Legal Aid Society's auction benefiting the Public Interest Stipend Fund, which helps students to do unpaid or low-paying public interest summer work.

Stipend is Added Bonus, Not a Requirement for Driven Vanderbilt Law Students Following Their Public Interest Callings

Vanderbilt University Law School's Public Interest Stipend did not enable Rachel Jordan to work with the ACLU of Tennessee this summer - she would have worked there no matter what, she says. The stipend, however, which will give her $5,000 for spending her entire summer doing public interest work, is allowing her to forgo a part-time job so she can do more volunteer work in the community, in addition to her full time schedule with the ACLU.

The Legal Aid Society-Employment Law Center, San Francisco, has teamed up with Bay-area law schools to provide free legal services to low-income people facing problems in the workplace. The AmeriCorps-sponsored program is run by the group Equal Justice Works, Washington, DC, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting public interest legal work and careers. The Summer Corps is a group of law students doing summer public interest internships - for which they receive a $1,000 voucher for educational expenses at the end of their summer stints.
