Emergencies Never Cease
By Mary Dalrymple

It's a little bit morbid, but take a second to flip through your local paper and notice all the bad news. You may see local businesses laying off workers, car accidents, health costs hitting record highs, and lots of other depressing things. (Then go read the cute animal feature to cheer yourself up.)

Retire Young Enough to Enjoy It
By Chuck Saletta

What is your top priority in life? Is it your money? The stuff that money can buy? Or is the time you have available to spend with your family, friends, and loved ones at the top of your list?

Alternative Uses for IRAs
By Elizabeth Brokamp

We all know that an IRA is meant to build a tidy little nest egg for retirement. After all, it's not called an ''Individual Retirement Arrangement'' for nothing. (Yes, the A stands for Arrangement, not Account — ask the IRS.)

5 IRA Myths
By Elizabeth Brokamp

Everyone knows that an IRA is a great way to save for retirement, but there are lesser-known (but very important) facts that may have escaped your attention. Read on for five myths about IRAs that may be affecting your bottom line.

The End of Retirement
By Robert Brokamp

Tired of reading about America's retirement woes? Then I have an alternative for you: Watch a TV show about them. Heck, you don't even have to move to your TV — you can watch it on your computer, from the comfort of your own desk chair. The particular program I'm talking about is an episode of the PBS series Frontline titled ''Can You Afford to Retire?''

Financial Vows in Marriage
By Elizabeth Brokamp

When my husband and I were on our honeymoon, we decided to write private wedding vows, which were a bit different than the typical ''I do's'' we'd exchanged at the church. Why? We hadn't relished the idea of sharing our innermost thoughts with the 100+ friends and family who bore witness to our marriage, and flowery promises just aren't our style. Besides all that, it would have been downright embarrassing to utter the words, ''I vow never to wear big-bottomed undies,'' in front of the priest, our parents, colleagues, and former boss.

Oh, Great — Another Financial Site?
By Rick Aristotle Munarriz

Whether or not you believe there's a glut of personal finance sites online, two big companies seem to think there's room for one more. Dow Jones (NYSE: DJ) and IAC/InterActiveCorp (Nasdaq: IACI) are teaming up to create a new community-driven destination for investors, budgeters, and just about anyone weighing a financial decision.

Buy the Neighborhood
By Elizabeth Brokamp

If you're in the market for a home this year, look beyond its four walls and directly at your neighbors. No, I'm not advocating spying (violating ''peeping Tom'' laws doesn't create a great first impression), but do thoroughly check out a prospective neighborhood before plunking down hundreds of thousands of your hard-earned dollars.

Abundant Options in Alternative Compensation
By Rich Duprey

While nearly every investor has heard of stock options, few are likely aware of their close cousins, restricted shares and stock appreciation rights. Even if investors have heard of them, fewer still probably understand how they work.

The Best Way to Save for Retirement
By Elizabeth Brokamp

A fellow parent recently posted the question, ''How do you stay focused on your retirement goals?'' on a message board that I frequent about raising children. While it may seem a bit off-topic, it's a highly relevant question — one that more people need to keep in the forefront of their minds. Whether each of us saves adequately for retirement can have ramifications, not only for ourselves, but for our kids and grandkids, too.

Ease Into Retirement
By Dan Caplinger

For some people, retirement is a long-awaited respite from a job they never liked. For others, it's the chance to do all those things they never seemed to have time for earlier in life. No matter what plans you have for your retirement, it's easy to think of it in very dramatic terms: One day you're working full-time, and the next you're retired, and not doing a thing.

You're Slowly Losing Money
By Elizabeth Brokamp

Bank statements don't make for scintillating reading, but if you take a close look, you could find a few unpleasant surprises. Such was the case when I glanced at our last statement and discovered our bank was simultaneously charging us for banking with online bill payment and banking without it. How we could be doing both — and paying for it — was beyond me. But there the charges were, $9.95 and $5.95, respectively, leaking dollars out of our checking account.

Rediscover Your Pre-Holiday Budget
By Elizabeth Brokamp

Did the holidays feel like one long competition for your money? From gifts for family and friends, Secret Santa games, Salvation Army bell-ringers, and the checkout folks at every store asking, "Would you like to add a dollar for XYZ charity?" it can be hard to catch your breath, much less stick to a budget.

Save Big on Auto Insurance

If saving money is at the top of your list of New Year's resolutions for 2007, then you'll want to get on the phone with your auto insurance company. You may be in for a treat in the form of a discount, whether it's because of your age, your exemplary behavior, or the type of car you drive.

5 Minutes or Less
By Elizabeth Brokamp

It's time to think about your resolutions for the New Year, but thinking about them is just the first step. After that comes doing them, something we can all acknowledge is a wee bit harder. Our excuses for inaction include fatigue, conflicting priorities, forgetfulness, or most often, that there's simply

Holiday Tipping in a Nutshell
By Elizabeth Brokamp

It seems that tipping for Christmas isn't just a New York phenomenon — some exotic ritual performed by big spenders in the land of doormen, taxis, and Broadway. Tipping is a show of appreciation for the people who make your life easier in big and small ways. Those people are not your friends exactly, but theyre more intimate than mere acquaintances (they've folded your underwear or massaged your scalp, for example). Yes, you can resort to gift cards or the ever-dreaded fruitcake, but they're often expecting a tip instead.
