By Robin Salisian

In this article you'll discover what the healthcare plans of the Democratic presidential candidates are. If implemented, their plans would not only affect minors and the uninsured but employers as well.

John McCain's Health Insurance Plan
By Robin Salisian

If something isn't done soon, healthcare spending could double by 2017. True, presidential candidates often disagree; however, there is one thing they currently all agree on: that healthcare needs a massive update.

Socialized Medicine: Polemic or Panacea?
By Akbar Ali

The concept and practice of socialized medicine have been matters of considerable difficulty for many Americans since the first serious attempt at national health coverage failed in the early 1990s. Opponents of universal and federally funded healthcare coined the term ''socialized medicine'' back in the 1920s as a pejorative which evokes socialism and government control, two ideas that are anathema to the entrenched American ideals of free market capitalism and individual choice.

Obesity Linked to Increase in Cancer Risk
By Akbar Ali

British and Swiss researchers published findings on February 18 which demonstrate in no uncertain terms that the occurrence of obesity increases the risk for a number of cancers. Their findings, published in the Lancet medical journal, pick up where the World Cancer Research Fund left off last year with its initial report recognizing a spike in cancer among populations living with unchecked obesity. This coincides with a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health which now identifies obesity as well on its way to becoming the number-one cause of cancer, outpacing the medical community's longtime poster carcinogen: tobacco.

Fighting AIDS in the 21st Century
By Akbar Ali

It may seem hard to believe, but AIDS has only been a major human disease since it was first identified in 1981. After the initial scare of an impending epidemic and a series of international programs designed to educate populations to combat the spread of the debilitating disease, many nations settled into a period of complacency about AIDS despite the fact that it has claimed as many as 25 million lives over the last 27 years. With all the media attention on the threats of terrorism and climate change, awareness about AIDS and its continuing destruction of specific populations has all but vanished off the radar of the international agenda.

Domestic Violence and the Influence of Feminism on Healthcare
By Akbar Ali

Domestic violence is a pervasive problem in America, residing in every conceivable demographic and across all boundaries of race, religion, and class. Protection of victims has historically faltered for a myriad of reasons, though the most oft-cited culprit is the unwillingness of the victim to tell others of her or his abuse.

Teen Pregnancy: What Are the Real Costs?
By Akbar Ali

The reproductive tendencies of Americans have been in the spotlight in recent weeks in light of a new report which claims that abortion rates have fallen in the United States to their lowest levels since 1976. The report from the nonprofit Alan Guttmacher Institute also mentions something which might startle casual observers of the abortion debate: one in five American pregnancies ends in abortion — despite the fact that abortion rates declined by 9% between 2000 and 2005 alone.

The Impact of Obesity on Healthcare
By Akbar Ali

By now it's common knowledge that America is home to the heaviest citizenry in the world, earning it the dubious distinction of being ''the fattest nation on Earth.'' Certainly, questions about how it got to be the global leader in obesity are many and complex, often with few or no answers, leaving both the average citizen and the healthcare industry in search of new ways to combat what has become a full-blown epidemic with no end in sight.

New Study Ranks U.S. Healthcare System Worst Among Industrialized Nations
By Akbar Ali

It seems that the current topic du jour in American public and political discourse is no longer terrorism or war but healthcare. But while the discussion is growing ever more expansive and the din of political promises crowding the airwaves, the U.S. healthcare system turns out to have a whole host of new challenges to face apart from universal health coverage.

Recognizing and Treating Drug and Alcohol Addiction
By Akbar Ali

Drug addiction and alcohol abuse remain very serious problems in America, where despite declines in overall drug use, addiction to new and specific types of drugs has skyrocketed. This has naturally brought with it a wide array of new problems and challenges for not only law enforcement and addicts' loved ones but also healthcare professionals and rehab facilities. It may come as a surprise that not all states are well equipped with programs that can help combat the lasting and sometimes lethal effects of drug abuse and addiction, though there are a number of tried and tested rehab facilities which can offer help to those who are ready to accept it.

Study Finds Uninsured Cancer Patients Twice As Likely to Die Within Five Years
By Akbar Ali

In what is not especially surprising news, a recent study by the American Cancer Society found that uninsured cancer patients are twice as likely to die within five years of diagnosis as those who are properly insured. The study, which was the first of its kind on the link between insured status and fatality rates, not only found that individuals without insurance are less likely to get screened for cancer but also that when cancer is detected in such individuals, it has often developed to a more advanced stage, requiring more invasive and costly procedures.

Health Insurance for Victims of Child Abuse
By Akbar Ali

Despite recent nationwide efforts to reduce the number of children abused physically, emotionally, or sexually by parents and primary caregivers, the incidence of child abuse in America remains a rampant and unfortunate fact. According to a report released by Medical News Today last year, a full 60% of healthcare professionals say they have treated an abused child, though less than half of those doctors and nurses reported the incidents to authorities. The line between child safety and professional confidentiality is a frequently blurred boundary, though few would argue that an apparent case of abuse should remain a secret between the victim and his or her physician.

Insuring America's New Epidemic: Autism
By Akbar Ali

Official estimates of the rate of occurrence of autism in American children a decade ago stood at one in 1,000. Today, the numbers have increased to an alarming one in 150, indicative of a full-blown autism epidemic. Indeed, recent studies have established that over 1 million children in the U.S. are currently living with autism, with a new child diagnosed every 20 minutes. It is also worth noting that autism occurs in boys at four times the rate it occurs in girls.

Depression and Healthcare
By Akbar Ali

Mental health issues continue to be the most problematic and least disclosed of all health concerns in America, though they remain a common ailment. A full 16% of Americans will experience some form of depression at some point in their lifetime, though other estimates put this number at almost double. This means that between 50 million and 100 million Americans will be living with some form of depression.

Who's More Likely to Be Uninsured? It's Not Who You Think.
By Akbar Ali

Sexual orientation and public health policy are two things which are becoming increasingly linked as the national fight for equal rights for same-sex couples becomes increasingly prevalent and contentious. While a record number of Americans now support civil unions granting equal rights for same-sex couples as are bestowed upon heterosexual couples, the benefits of legal marriage continue to be denied to gay and lesbian couples, who must often register for services as single or unmarried and take on additional expenses and restrictions not levied against traditional married couples.

Disparities in Health Insurance Fall Along Racial Lines
By Akbar Ali

According to a report released by the Commonwealth Fund, Hispanic and African American adults are one-and-a-half to three times as likely as white adults to be without health insurance. Accordingly, they are also much more likely to be underinsured, be burdened with medical debt, and work in jobs where their employers offer them no access to healthcare.

Medical Billing Errors on the Rise
By Akbar Ali

If you've visited the emergency room lately and received a bill in the mail, that feeling of shock at the total cost may have been more justified than you think. A new study has found that as healthcare costs increase, so does the number of errors appearing on patients' bills. And the charges aren't always negligible; depending on what you've been charged for, you can end up paying tens of thousands more than you should have.

The Clinton Healthcare Plan
By Akbar Ali

'Tis the season for campaign promises, and what better one than universal healthcare for presidential hopefuls to tout? Much like her famed attempt at securing universal healthcare for all Americans while she was first lady, Senator Hillary Clinton is now trying to make headway with a new proposal which, while wary of the mistakes she made back in 1993, is designed to propel her appeal as a populist figure to middle-class voters.

Battling Breast Cancer While Battling Insurance
By Akbar Ali

Though October was officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the battle against the number-two killer of American women is waged year round. While trying to protect themselves by being proactive and getting their mammograms, many women are finding that getting a mammogram is not as simple as calling up their doctor and making an appointment. In some areas of the country, the prices of mammograms vary significantly between clinics, sometimes within the same building, which has confused many women and has even caused some women to put off their mammograms because of the steep price tags that come with them.
