Jon Thatcher, County District Attorney Assistant

Jon Thatcher was born in Abilene, Texas, and grew up in Greenville, Texas. Jon said that Greenville was a small town, and brought with it pros and cons. It was a simple town, with only one middle school and high school, but being only one hour east of Dallas, was close enough to the big city to offer entertainment and necessities. Growing up in a small town can give one a feeling of security and comfort. People look out for each other. However, there can also be a huge frustration for lack of opportunity, as Jon felt as he got older. He knew he would leave Greenville after high school and that he would ''go on to bigger and better things, and never look back,'' which is exactly what he did.

Nancy Herzberg has lived a very colorful life. Born in Brazil to an American father and Brazilian mother, she primarily spoke Portuguese as a child. Her father worked in the airline industry, which prompted the family's moves to Colombia (where she learned Spanish), Karachi (where she ''picked up'' some Urdu), New York, Wake Island, and then Hawaii, where she resided from 1959 to 2003. She spent six years in formal Hawaiian language classes and also learned hula. Herzberg says she was privileged to dance in Hawaii's Merry Monarch Festival, which is a hula competition in which ''halau'' schools from around the world compete.

Wichita is the largest city in Kansas and boasts cultural and recreational venues that make it one of the 10 best cities to live in, according to Money magazine. The first complete recording made by jazz musician Charlie ''Bird'' Parker occurred in 1940 at the Trocadero Ballroom in Wichita, and the Wichita Jazz Festival remains a significant annual event on the national jazz calendar every year. There's also a Wichita River Festival held each May, and as one of the longest running festivals in the state of Kansas, it features over 70 events, including musical entertainment, athletic competitions, traveling exhibits, cultural and historical activities, plays, and a flea market. Undoubtedly, growing up in such a culturally rich environment must have made Shawver a very well-rounded individual.
