Natalie Lange: 2L at Northern Illinois University College of Law
By Douglas May

Having grown up in the town of Belvidere, Illinois, 26-year-old Natalie Lange has many good things to say about her upbringing. Belvidere is located in north central Illinois and is roughly 75 miles from downtown Chicago. The Kishwaukee River divides the small town, which is an amalgam of industrial communities surrounded by prosperous farms. It is the county seat of Boone County, which had an estimated 2006 population of over 52,000. Lange says, ''The name, Belvidere, means 'beautiful to view,' and Belvidere is truly a beautiful, warm community of great Midwestern families. Also known as the 'City of Murals' because of the tastefully done artistic murals of historical scenes on the sides of historical landmarks, Belvidere has great schools and is home of the locally famous Boone County Fair.'' Lange says she was inspired by sports coaches, pastors, parents, and extended family members when she was young. Although charming, Belvidere couldn't keep Lange from pursuing future endeavors elsewhere. As she puts it, ''When I was young, I dreamed of living in a larger city and meeting people from diverse backgrounds.''

Elizabeth Nazari: Resolute Determination in the Face of Adversity
By Douglas May

Although originally from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, Elizabeth Nazari's family relocated to Arizona when she was 12 years old, and she considers the state her home. The 2L law student at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at ASU is 28 (''for a few years now''), and comments that the Arizona lifestyle suits her well. She says that she ''loves the desert: warm summer nights, the smell of the creosote after it rains, and sunny winter days wearing shorts and flip-flops.'' She says that her grandmother was a great inspiration to her when she was young, and is to this day. Her grandmother was the third licensed female auto mechanic in the state of Illinois. During a time when ''most women stayed home and baked casseroles,'' she owned her own brake shop. ''The family lived in poverty, though . . . I guess men were hesitant to bring their cars into a woman's shop to have major repairs done . . . But she ran that shop anyway, almost as if it was a great act of defiance. Many people came to trust her exclusively with their autos over time.''

Javier Grajeda: Law Student at ASU's Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law
By Douglas May

For Javier Grajeda, graduating from college and going to law school is a very big deal. ''I am the first member of my family to attend a university and a professional school. I graduated from the University of California at Berkeley (go Bears!) with a degree in political science,'' Grajeda says. To graduate college and pursue graduate studies is quite an accomplishment for anyone, but to be the first in your family to achieve this lofty goal is indeed an enormous feat, setting a new standard for other family members.

Marjorie Williams: Air Force Officer Entering the Field of Law
By Douglas May

''Although it sounds cliche, it [the law] has truly opened up an entirely new world of opportunities for me while simultaneously allowing me to draw from past experiences. I love the fact that there are numerous things that I can do with a law degree. It is also somewhat empowering to grasp how our legal system works,'' says Marjorie Williams, 29-year-old 3L at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.

Tom Jacob: 2L at Baylor Law School
By Douglas May

''You're always learning something new. I think that's what I enjoy about the law in general. For example, I had a professor who liked to joke that at one point in his legal career he was the foremost expert in the process of freezing shrimp for transportation. He had to learn a lot about it for a case he worked on. That's the best part of the law — to be a good advocate, you have to know the subject matter of the case you're working on. That means learning something new for each case. Sure, frozen shrimp may not be that interesting, but I think the process of continued learning is important. The law is one of the few areas where you are always learning something new.''

Timea Hargesheimer: From Hard Times to the American Dream
By Douglas May

''There were actually seasons in all three of the places I grew up, in contrast with the almost year-long summer here in Arizona. In Munich I remember going to Oktoberfest at a young age because my mother was a beer maiden there. I like Seattle the best because it rains there as much as the sun shines here, and I love rain. In Europe the winters were extremely cold, and the winters were very harsh, especially in rural Hungary where we lived. I didn't really like living in Hungary because we lived in a small village where there was one main house that had a telephone, and the showers were outdoors,'' recalls Timea Hargesheimer.

3L Richard Bradley Ng: From Pre-Med Doubts to "Courtroom Dreams"
By Mahsa Khalilifar

''I went to college originally as a pre-med student, but when I realized medicine wasn't for me, I fell into my personal interests, history and political science,'' 3L Richard Bradley Ng confesses. "I entertained the idea of pursuing a Ph.D. in history and one day teaching, but I felt that becoming a lawyer — specifically, becoming a prosecutor — would be more intellectually stimulating, challenging, and financially stable in terms of being able to support a family. Most importantly, it gives me the unique chance to make society more just, fair, and safe."
