New Report on Washington's Death with Dignity Law Released

According to a report from the Washington non-profit group, Compassion & Choices, 28 terminally ill residents of the state have taken advantage of the state's Death with Dignity Law to end their lives with medications made available under the new law. The terminally ill residents were legally able to receive life-ending prescriptions under the Death with Dignity Law that came into effect in March. Out of the 28 deaths, only 11 of the individuals used pills to help facilitate their deaths; five residents died without assistance. The new law passed in November 2008, allows patients with fewer than 6 months to live the right to request doctors to prescribe lethal medications if the patient is deemed mentally competent. However, the patient must be capable of administering the medications to him/herself.

Terrorist Fights Upper Canada Law Society to be Called to Bar

A convicted hijacker and terrorist has appealed to the Law Society of Upper Canada to practise law in Ontario. In July 1984, Parminder Singh Saini was part of a Sikh group that hijacked an Indian Airlines jet. The hijackers forced the Airbus carrying 265 passengers to land in Lahore, Pakistan. Negotiations with the Pakistani authorities lasted over 20 hours. The hijackers surrendered, and no one on board was injured.

Florida City Joins CrimeReport.com Network

In a press release issued by CrimeReports.com on September 1, 2009, the city of St. Petersburg, Florida is the 500th law enforcement agency to sign on with the network to share crime data with the public. CrimeReports.com is an online crime mapping network that informs and enables citizens of a particular region to receive crime related information and data through alerts and reports. Over 499 communities across North America have signed up with the network and nearly 100 additional agencies signed on within the past 90 days. Other law enforcements have already joined the network including Washington DC, Boston, Baltimore, Omaha, and Portland, Oregon.
