<<Whether you want to soak up the sun, sightsee, or experience an adventure, there's a vacation for you. Traveling gives students opportunities to clear their minds and relax so they will be recharged when they return to school. If that isn't reason enough to consider enjoying some time off, consider the many health benefits associated with taking a break from the daily grind. Not only does traveling reduce stress and prevent burnout, but many studies also suggest that taking vacations on a regular basis increases a person's life expectancy and decreases the risk of heart disease.

Depending on when you plan to travel, there are many hot spots for young people. In the winter, warm locations like Miami, FL, always attract college crowds. Popular spring break retreats include Cancun, Las Vegas, NV, and Tampa, FL. Students can travel just about anywhere during the summer months since this is when they have their longest college breaks.

Even budget-conscious students have affordable travel options. Companies like SmarterTravel.com and Travelocity offer many different travel packages to popular destinations around the world. Most packages include airfare, hotel accommodations, and meals, as well as discounts to surrounding attractions. A package deal is often the best option for a student traveling somewhere for the first time because the proprietor has made connections with local vendors, such as spas, restaurants, and wineries, to arrange reduced prices.

Europe is one of the most popular vacation destinations, and there are some easy ways to make traveling there more affordable. For instance, if you're planning to visit multiple European cities, purchasing an open-jaw airline ticket may be the most cost-efficient way to fly. Rather than requiring you to fly to and depart from the same airport, an open-jaw ticket allows you to fly to one city and depart from another.

Also, the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) and the International Youth Travel Card (IYTC) offer discounts on airfare, transportation, accommodations, museum passes, and other travel services. Another helpful tip is to use credit cards to make purchases and ATM cards to get cash, which will allow you to take advantage of the best exchange rates. You can also save money by purchasing multi-ride bus or metro tickets to get around major cities.

If a weekend getaway is what you seek, consider joining a student group. Student-run organizations frequently coordinate trips and events for members. For instance, the Environmental Law Association at The George Washington University Law School organizes an annual whitewater-rafting trip. Also, the school's moot court participants travel across the country for competitions against students from other colleges.

Too much travel can potentially be detrimental to students' academic performances, particularly for those enrolled in grueling law programs. For students concerned about falling behind, it is a good idea to maintain a balance of work and play during vacation—so when you're relaxing poolside, sipping frozen drinks, consider reviewing for the bar or preparing for class.

Even students who don't want to take breaks from school can travel just about anywhere. Study-abroad programs are available in a wide range of subjects in countries all over the world. Foreign-study programs are increasingly popular among international law students. Students can earn school credits while traveling to new places and experiencing new cultures.

Externships and internships also offer great opportunities to travel while attending law school. Not only can students gain experience in the work world, but they also get to live in new areas, meet new people, and see new things.

However, interns should be prepared to do more work than play. The Wall Street Journal reports that a growing number of law firms are giving their interns more work. One Washington, DC-based firm even sends its summer associates to a two-week boot camp, where their litigation skills are put to the test. Despite the opportunities to travel afforded by internships, interns may not get to enjoy their new surroundings as much as they would like to.

Before traveling anywhere, students should research their destinations before arriving. If students are visiting other countries, they should familiarize themselves with the basic laws and customs of those countries. The same safety precautions that are used at home should be used everywhere. Avoid walking alone on deserted streets after dark, don't carry large amounts of cash, and stay alert.

If you can't afford to travel, it is still important to take time off from schoolwork and recharge. Winter, spring, and summer breaks allow great opportunities to catch up on sleep, eat nutritious meals, and exercise regularly.
