On Monday, the Board of Overseers of the Maine Bar found that a Rumford attorney who called in bomb threats to two schools last year can continue to practice law, but under conditions. The detailed opinion of the board mentioned how Ron Hoffman committed the crimes and lied to the police. Hoffman later accepted responsibility but attributed his misconduct to medical conditions for which he was not receiving adequate treatment.

The board took into account his current medical conditions and found that he could continue to practice law with proper medication and counseling. At the same time, the board stipulated that if Hoffman failed to attend the required stress management classes or failed to comply with other requirements in the decision then his license to practice law in Maine would be suspended for two years.

Though the board found that Hoffman had violated the Maine Rules of Professional Conduct, it also found that Hoffman had taken adequate steps to prevent further missteps.

The order mentioned, "The record demonstrates that since mid-April 2012, Hoffman has proceeded aggressively to address his medical and mental health issues."

In March 2012, Hoffman had called up two schools and informed them that there were bombs in the schools. This led to a panic and immediate evacuation of 360 children with law enforcement tensed up for action. The police ultimately determined that these were hoax calls and there were no bombs in the school buildings.

The calls created emotional stress in the community and affected the young children who were confused and angry.

Ultimately law enforcement found that the hoax calls had been made from a Tracphone purchased a day earlier from a Walmart store. While reviewing the security camera footage, Maine State Police Detective Randall Keaten recognized Hoffman.

In court, Hoffman argued that he suffered from different medical conditions like insulin-dependent diabetes, obsessive compulsive disorder, Graves disease, anxiety and depression and other maladies.
