The first day at Law College is likely to set the tone for the rest of the year. Unlike other courses, professors do not treat the first day casually, with casual banter, introducing the course and telling the students what to expect and then after brief introductions dismisses the class. Instead, law school reading assignments are posted in advance and students are expected to read and prepare those materials for the first day.

A second peculiarity is the method of instruction. The professor begins and ends the first class, just as he will most other classes, with a question. The newness of this teaching device (known as the Socratic Method), and the possibility that the student might be called on to answer the professor's questions, generally combine to produce anxiety. Even the most articulate individuals will have nervous moments on the first day of class.

How does then one prepare for law school classes, especially in the early part of the first year. It is important that you buy legal textbooks and study guides that will clarify and clarify to you how to read assignments and brief cases. There are other rudimentary guidelines that will ensure that your initiation into law school is not as difficult and cumbersome as people would lead you to believe.

  • Since the assignments are given well in advance a student should make a list of the assignments that are to be submitted or presented in class over the next few days and make a conscious decision on how he or she will complete the assignments and be ready to submit them before they are due in class.
  • Locate a relaxed place to do your assignments. This could be the law school library or the study-rooms or even a quiet corner in the house. Just ensure that the place is comfortable, quiet and free from disturbances.
  • Before doing your assignment, research it completely - see where it fits in within the law school curriculum. Try to comprehend why you are reading the assignment and which part of the course does it relate to.
  • When asked to brief a case in class, do it thoroughly. Whilst preparing for the brief, don’t just dot down notes but type out the entire brief for the case.
  • When coming to class bring your textbooks, guide books, notes, and curriculum and case briefs with you and after you finish a particular item on your to-do list, strike it off. It gives you a sense of success and completion and motivates you to keep on working.

Success at law school requires perseverance, enthusiasm, and competence. It requires that you do everyday’s work diligently and on a regular basis. Students who fall behind become beleaguered with work and start feeling discouraged and dispirited, and often that feeling prevails and can even result in the student dropping out of the program. Suffice to say the first year of law school will be the most painstaking and demanding academic experience the student will ever undergo. Being prepared for it well, is half the battle won to ensure that it ends up as a triumphant experience.
