Alternative Legal Careers: How to make a non-legal resume

OBJECTIVE:

An objective states what you want to do and where you want to do it. It is specific for the position and can be changed to reflect the exact position you are seeking.


PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Your work experience should be explained in the way that the employer receiving it will best understand it. Set a goal of three action phrases per job description. Always express what you have accomplished, not the information that describes what you do every day. Avoid information that the employer may already know and buzz words only appropriate for one area of work.

If possible, categorize your work experience. Again consider the needs of the employer. If the employer is looking for management skills or organizational skills, consider subcategories entitled "management experience" or "organizational ability" within your job description.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE:

If you have experience in college or as a volunteer which might be appropriate, include it here. Consider clustering your additional experience by presenting the information in a very general way. For example, "1984-87 positions included: Assistant Manager for a specialty shop; Office Manager for a small business."

ACTIVITIES & HONORS:

Generally, this information will be included with your education information. If you can use this information to validate your transferable skills, you may want to include it in a separate category.

EDUCATION:

Legal resumes will differentiate between law school and college. A non-legal resume should combine all of your education under one heading. Listing your professional experience before your education will help the employer to get to know you as a skilled employee before they see you as a law school graduate.

REFERENCES:

Although references are often "available upon request," it is helpful to include them here. You may want to consider creating a new list of "business" references who could discuss the transferable skills you will bring to the non-legal position you are seeking.

Although your professional experience generally will come first on a non-legal resume, if your education prior to law school is directly related to the position you are pursuing you should consider listing education below your objective.
