Public prosecutors in the Contra Costa County in northern California will now be getting a pay cut.
Most of the county falls under the San Francisco metro area and the county's supervisors voted on Tuesday to approve a deal in which the county's Deputy District Attorneys will get a 5.24% pay cut. This decision was made after labor negotiations were stalled.
The reason being given is that the county is cash-strapped and needs to balance its budget, which means all public employees will face similar cuts. But the prosecutors are not too keen on the idea of a pay cut. John Cope, one of the DAs and also a negotiator for the prosecutor's union says that wages for prosecutors are already among the lowest in the region and the prosecutor's office has already seen several attorneys leave for neighboring counties for better pay.

He also says that these people have not been replaced and when they are, those positions will be taken by inexperienced lawyers fresh out of law school.
County supervisor Karen Mitchoff however has defended the move saying that other departments have also agreed to pay cuts and it would be unfair to them if the DAs were sparred. Mitchoff even said, "They are trying to say that they are better and more important employees than other employees who have had to take cuts."
