Lisa McGibbon is a star paralegal. Lisa transitioned from accounting into paralegal studies. She obtained both an Associate in Business and an Associate in Paralegal Studies. Further, she received her certification from the National Association of Legal Assistants and Paralegals (“NALA”). NALA is one of the nation's leading professional associations for paralegals. NALA is a non-profit organization providing continuing education and professional development programs for paralegals. NALA provides courses for all levels of expertise.
During her studies, Lisa's most memorable moment was when she was asked to prepare a brief on a topic of her choice. She decided to explore and study the vast differences of the religions in the world. She was amazed at how all of the religions have such vastly different beliefs, and major important similarities.
She decided to work in the legal industry after she moved to Florida. “I was working in accounting for almost 12 years, but there was not a large industry of corporations in the area. I wanted a career that would be versatile and constantly changing. I find being a paralegal interesting, challenging, and satisfying. The best part of my job is researching each case and the case's specific issues.”
Her advice for new and recent staff members is to listen, learn, and never be afraid to explore. The paralegal field has progressed since she first began her journey. Her goal is to educate the legal community on the value of a paralegal as a team member. Paralegals are an asset to their team and their clients.
If she was not working in the legal field, she would probably be working as an accountant, but she finds working as a paralegal a better fit. Challenges provide motivation for her. No matter what the challenging issue or obstacle, she rises to meet the challenge. In five years, she sees herself working as a senior paralegal in a large law firm.
One of the things she holds dearest to her heart is her integrity. She could give up a lot, but giving up her integrity is not an option. Integrity is an integral part of how she operates in her daily life.
Lisa is the kind of person that personifies perseverance. “I am determined, and I don't let anyone get in my way when I have a mission.” Lisa is not just a powerhouse of passion at work, but she is also passionate about Relay for Life and the Alzheimer's Association. Her mother is affected by Alzheimer's, so the Alzheimer's Association will always hold a special place in her heart. Relay for Life is a relay race that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer. These relays help raise funds, help participants remember loved ones lost, and provide the option for people battling disease to fight back and regain hope.
At Relay for Life, survivors start the track off with a victory lap marking their victory over cancer. Participants take part in part of the relay, and there are numerous festivities including a Fight Back Ceremony.
