Fortunately for Paynter and his family, the move proved to be advantageous to everyone. “We have absolutely loved our time in Chicago,” said Paynter who was particularly pleased with the support the school provided students with families.
The University of Chicago School of Law offers a number of family friendly student organizations including Amicus, which is geared toward married students and those with children. Paynter is also involved in the Dallin H. Oaks Society, a group for Mormon students. Through these groups and other social events, Paynter and his family have found the law school experience to be particularly welcoming.
As residents in Graduate Student Housing, Paynter's family has had the opportunity to interact with and befriend students within other University of Chicago graduate programs. “These friendships have been very important to our family and continue to provide support and encouragement for my wife and children as I attend school. It has also been enriching to learn more about other fields of study as we share with other graduate students,” asserts Paynter.
In addition to his involvement in family-oriented groups, Paynter is active in several other law school activities, including the Legal Forum, the Federalist Society, the Edmund Burke Society, and intramural sports.
At the University of Chicago School of Law, Paynter is a participant in the Corporate Lab course, which joins small groups of students and corporations to give students the opportunity to handle legal matters comparable to those that they would be presented with during summer internships or as first-year associates. Corporations that participate in the course include big names such as Microsoft, Accenture, and AT&T.
According to Paynter, the course has provided him with the opportunity to develop “many of the important skills necessary to becoming a good lawyer.” He notes that while the course has provided skill development in critical areas such as research and writing, there is also a focus on the areas of client development and interpersonal skills.
Paynter is a 2009 graduate of Brigham Young University where he majored in history and business management.
