Former Chicago Bear Jim McMahon—a member of the 1985 Super Bowl champion team—said he sustained five concussions during his career. McMahon claims they've left him with memory problems.

The injured players allege the NFL conditioned them to hit with their heads, while neglecting to provide treatment and concealing the correlation between the gridiron and brain injuries.

Plaintiffs call the NFL's alleged dismissiveness of former players' reports of headaches; dizziness and dementia constitute negligence and misconduct. They seek medical monitoring and money for medical expenses.
A player, thanks to medically-induced financial problems, could soon be homeless, according to players' counsel Larry Coben.

“Players' lawyer Larry Coben of Philadelphia said one client may soon lose his home because of his health-related financial problems,” according to an article from the Associated Press.

“The big issue, for us, is they were told for decades to lead with their heads,” said Coben, according to the same article from the Associated Press. “The NFL would never admit that there's any correlation (to later health problems).”

Some plaintiffs receive money from the NFL's 88 Plan. The plan, with money from the league and players' union, helps care for players with dementia and brain injuries. With that said, Coben claimed payments are far from adequate.

Other plaintiffs include Joseph “Joey” Thomas, 31, who played for the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins; former Atlanta Falcons defensive back Ray Easterling, 61; and former Falcons and San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Wayne Radloff, 50.

Additional Philadelphia suit plaintiffs are former Eagles center Gerry Feehery, 51; Mike Furrey, 34, a wide receiver on several teams from 2003 to 2010; and former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Steve Kiner, 64.

Retired players—75 to be exact—also sued the NFL in Los Angeles. That suit claimed the league has known about concussions' impact since the 1920s and kept that information secret until June 2010.

The legal brief also named NFL's official helmet supplier, Riddell, as a defendant. Its Web site highlights the protection its products now provide. However, there's no response to the legal action posted.

Unlike the latter lawsuit, the Philadelphia suit is the first to take a class-action approach. The NFL has now implemented new guidelines and mandated independent doctors decide whether a player should return to the field.
