2/15/05 Pillsbury Winthrop and Shaw Pittman to merge San Francisco-based Pillsbury Winthrop and Shaw Pittman of Washington, DC, have announced their intent to merge, with the deal expected to close on April 4, 2005. The combined firm, which will be named Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, will have approximately 900 lawyers in 16 international offices. Pillsbury chair Mary Cranston is slated to be chair of the merged firm, with Shaw Pittman's managing partner Stephen Huttler and Pillsbury's David Snyder serving as vice chairs. Pillsbury's Marina Park will be acting as firmwide managing partner. Legal Times Wilson Sonsini CEO cedes role to partner In a move he hopes will help transform Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati into a national powerhouse, Larry Sonsini has announced some changes at the top. The firm's chairman and CEO is giving up his CEO role and handing it over to partner John Roos, presently the managing director of professional services. The firm's managing director of business development, Jeffrey Saper, will take over as Wilson's vice chairman. The changes have been in the planning stages for months, according to Sonsini. Wilson Sonsini has offices in eight U.S. cities, with the vast majority in Palo Alto and San Francisco, CA. None of the other offices has more than about 30 lawyers. McKenna Long announces changes Atlanta-based McKenna Long & Aldridge is creating corporate transactional, real estate finance, and state and local public policy practices in Denver with the addition of eight attorneys from Friedlob Sanderson Paulson & Tourtillott, doubling the size of the Denver office. In addition, Luis A. Aguilar has joined the corporate practice as a partner in Atlanta. Aguilar, who will focus on corporate governance, public and private offerings, mergers and acquisitions, and other aspects of federal and state securities laws and regulations, joins the firm from Alston & Bird, where he was a partner. Prior to joining Alston & Bird, he was general counsel, executive vice president and corporate secretary of INVESCO and a member of INVESCO's board of directors and management committee. Firm Press Release Slotnick merges with Buchanan Ingersoll Slotnick, Shapiro & Crocker LLP, a nationally known litigation boutique with an emphasis on complex commercial litigation, has joined Buchanan Ingersoll PC, one of the largest law firms in the country. Barry I. Slotnick founded the New York firm more than 40 years ago and has represented corporations, celebrities, CEOs, and politicians in cases throughout the world. At Buchanan Ingersoll, Slotnick will lead the firm's white-collar defense practice and the New York office's complex litigation practice. Slotnick made headlines recently when he successfully represented Reservist Capt. Jay Ferriola and Army Captain Jose Mendez in their suits against the U.S. Army contesting a callback to serve in Iraq. Slotnick has also argued and won cases in the United States Supreme Court. Firm press release Weil Gotshal & Manges enters commercial litigation Weil Gotshal & Manges is launching a commercial litigation practice in its Redwood Shores, CA, office with six lawyers from its New York headquarters transferring to Silicon Valley. Kenneth Steinthal, Weil Gotshal's second most senior litigator, is heading up the group. The Recorder International scene: French mergers There have been two law firm mergers in France so far this year. In January, Poulain & Associes merged with Sonier & Associes to form a 16-lawyer bankruptcy firm. This month, Ginestie Paley-Vincent & Associes merged with Magellan to create a 70-lawyer firm known as Ginestie Magellan Paley-Vincent.
