9/8/04 Lathrop & Gage to Open IP Office in New York Lathrop & Gage, based in Kansas City, MO, has recently branched out to New York, specifically Midtown Manhattan. Seven intellectual property trial attorneys will staff the new office, including two partners. This move will advance the firm's efforts to bolster their national and international IP litigation presence. They arrive courtesy of Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo, P.C., and join a firm ranked 6th in the number of patent cases filed in 2003 by IP Law and Business' Patent Litigation Survey. Glover as its managing partner, making Glover the first woman to take the helm of a major law firm in the Pacific Northwest. An honors graduate of Whitman College and Harvard Law School, Glover has focused her corporate practice in the areas of health care transactions, technology, regulatory compliance, and executive compensation. She has represented numerous high-profile clients, including Premera Blue Cross, Starbucks Corporation, Microsoft Corporation, and the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle. Her affiliation with the 430-attorney Preston Gates & Ellis began 29 years ago. Firm Press Release, 9/2/04 The American Lawyer releases the "A-List" The release of The American Lawyer "A-List" brought good news for Debevoise & Plimpton, which topped the list of the nation's 20 elite firms. In contrast to the Am Law 200, which ranks firms on gross revenue alone, the A-List weights survey results in the areas of revenue per lawyer, pro bono, associate satisfaction, and diversity. San Francisco's Heller Ehrman and Los Angeles' Munger Tolles & Olson rounded off the top three and five firms made the list for the first time this year. The American Lawyer, 9/1/04 Law firms capitalize on surge in public offerings IPO Vital Signs has announced the new leading law firms in the representation of IPO issuers and IPO underwriters. Cooley Godward earned the top berth in the former, serving as counsel to 13 IPO issuers out of the 206 companies that went public in the twelve month period that ended August 10, 2004. Latham & Watkins and Sullivan & Cromwell tied as the busiest IPO underwriters' law firms, handling 14 IPOs each out of the 210 IPOs in the period that ended August 18, 2004. If the tie goes to the firm representing the biggest deals, then Sullivan & Cromwell would come out ahead with an aggregate offer amount at $3.2 billion compared to Latham & Watkin's $1.1 billion. Both practice areas saw dramatic increases from the last year, with the number of public offerings quadrupling. IPO Vital Signs, 8/23/04 & 8/30/04 White & Case bolsters its litigation group Prominent Florida litigator Rudolph Aragon will join the Miami offices of White & Case as partner. Aragon is making the lateral move from the six-partner Aragon Burlington Weil Schweip Kaplan & Blonsky PA, a litigation firm he co-founded 25 years ago. In his commercial litigation practice, Aragon has assumed a front-line role in the representation of national and international clients in complex contract disputes, national class action suits, and a wide range of other matters before both trial and appellate courts. An accomplished legal scholar, Aragon graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and Yale Law School and has co-authored several influential legal publications.
