9/13/04 Heller Ehrman Chairman Steps Down Barry Levin, chairman of California-based Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe, will be stepping down after a wildly successful five-and-one-half-year run. During his tenure, the firm doubled in size and nearly matched that feat in profits per attorney. The Levin era will end only because of Heller Ehrman's policy of limiting the chairman to two three-year terms. The Recorder, New York Lawyer, 9/10/04 Former Enron Task Force Director Joins Morgan Lewis Morgan, Lewis & Bockius has hired former Enron task force director Leslie R. Caldwell. She will head up its white-collar criminal defense practice in New York. Two major convictions of principals in the Enron fiasco were obtained on her watch. New York Law Journal, New York Lawyer, 9/10/04 Gunster, Yoakley & Steward Slapped with Malpractice Suit Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart, based in Florida, has been hit with a legal malpractice suit, which also names shareholder Mark Scheer. The $170-million lawsuit, filed by E.S. Bankest, L.C. (now bankrupt), seeks compensatory damages for breach of fiduciary duties. Gunster's president feels it's "outrageous" that this suit even exists and feels that nothing untoward has taken place on the part of his firm. Miami Daily Business Review, New York Lawyer, 9/10/04 American Society of Trial Consultants Appoints President The American Society of Trial Consultants has appointed Chicago trial consultant Dr. Daniel Wolfe president. He brings to the table much experience in high-profile cases and has worked on the Rodney King and O.J. Simpson trials. He has consulted on cases dealing with antitrust, product liability, and intellectual property, among others. Law.com, 9/10/04 McDermott Enhances Its DC Trial Department McDermott Will & Emery has bolstered its Washington, DC, trial department with the additions of Jason A. Levine and Richard W. Smith. They were both formerly employed by Covington & Burling. Law.com, 9/10/04 Las Vegas Firms Merge Jones Vargas and Wadhams and Akridge, both Las Vegas firms, have decided to merge. Together, they total 65 attorneys. Firm press release, 9/3/04 O'Melveny & Myers Increases Its Far East Presence O'Melveny & Myers is adding nine attorneys to its Far East offices in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.
