In her last position, Smith served as senior vice president, general counsel, corporate secretary, and global government relations officer at International Paper, a paper and forest products company. She was with International Paper since 2003. Prior to that, Smith held the position of senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary at Owens Corning for five years. In her position at Owens Corning, a global buildings material business, she assisted in sifting through litigation concerning mass lawsuits dealing with claims of asbestos exposure. In 2000, when the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Smith successfully proposed a plan to pay settlements over an extended period of time and also managed the company's reorganization.
Smith also spent eight years at General Electric, where, at the age of 35, she served as one of the company's first female general counsels, as well as one of the youngest. As vice president of GE, Smith was involved in the company's defense when the US government presented a suit claiming price fixing on certain industrial diamond products. The lawsuit was subsequently dismissed.
Before joining GE, Smith served as a partner at Baker & McKenzie. She received her BA from Vassar College in New York and graduated with highest honors. She was honored as one of the first women to be presented with a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, where she earned her Master of Philosophy in Economics. Following her time at Oxford University, Smith attended the University of Miami School of Law, where she obtained her JD degree with honors.

PepsiCo, which is headquartered in Purchase, New York, has its main businesses in the following products: Quaker, Tropicana, Gatorade, Frito-Lay, and Pepsi-Cola. The company offers a large portfolio of food and beverage brands.
