Well, a new survey conducted by Kaplan Test Prep suggests, it's the latter.

In Kaplan's October survey of 1,383 hopeful lawyers taking the LSAT, they asked the question, ''What is most important to you when picking a law school to apply to?'' The response: 30% of those asked cited a school's ranking as the most important aspect of which school they would choose. After ranking, 24% said geography, 19% said academic programming, 12% stated affordability (strangely low in this economy, no?) and only 8% of those asked considered a law school's job placement statistics as the most influential factor in where they would choose to study law leading one to ask the question: Have they eyed the job market recently?

''Our survey shows that pre-law students are heavily influenced about where to apply to law school based on rankings, likely because of the perceived benefits that come with graduating from a top-ranked program,'' said Howard Bell, executive director of pre-law programs at Kaplan. ''Though generally speaking the higher a law school places in the rankings, the more earnings potential a graduate has, rankings don't show you the entire landscape. In fact, many law schools themselves don't think the rankings process is generally fair. Ultimately, pre-law students should enroll in the JD program that best fits their personal needs and professional goals.''

After a whirl-wind year of angry post-law grads rebelling, and in some cases, hunger-striking, in order for more transparency at law schools, it is interesting to note Bell's claim that law schools themselves' don't find the rankings process to be fair.

On his blog, Morse Code, Robert Morse, the director of data and research for U.S. News states, ''If prospective students or their advisers are using the U.S. News law school rankings as the only basis to choose one law school over another, that would be the absolutely incorrect usage of the rankings.
