Secret investigations, alleged rigged elections, disrespect for one’s superior and completely inappropriate courtroom behavior are just a few of the dynamics involved with the curious San Diego legal personality DeAnn Salcido. The controversy has been ongoing for at least two years, though the Commission on Judicial Performance did not announce it was investigating then-judge Salcido until after she was elected in June, 2010. Among other things, she is accused of having made untrue allegations against other judges during that re-election campaign in an effort to sway voters to her side. She even went so far as to say during one press conference that her boss, Judge Peter Deddeh was wrong to not have sentenced John Gardner to the fullest extent that the law provided. Had he been sentenced to the maximum number of years in a case in the 1990s versus allowing a plea bargain to be entered, he would not have been on the streets and would not have murdered two California girls, Amber Dubois and Chelsea King.

More recently, however, the Commission found itself adding to its internal investigation when it learned Judge Salcido had ''improperly videotaped court proceedings to promote herself for a potential television entertainment program''. It said statements were made during filming that suggested she had carefully scheduled cases based on nothing more than their potential appeals. She made disturbing remarks and ''engaged in improper conduct''. She had one defendant arrested for contempt of court without providing due process as required by law and made inappropriate comments to those in the audience for the benefit of the cameras.

So just who is DeAnn Salcido?

The University of California at San Diego graduate decided to pursue law school after receiving her bachelor’s degree in 1983. She attended UCLA, where she received her JD in 1989. She was a founding member of the UCSD Hispanic Scholarship Council and in this capacity, she played a pivotal role in raising hundreds of thousands of dollars so that other Hispanic college students can continue in their own educations.

In the past, she served on the UCSD Board of Overseers, the San Diego Commission on Status of Women, a Teen Choice Mentor and the recipient of many awards. This begs the question as to why she felt as though she had to resort to such distasteful and even illegal methods for not only ensuring a victory in the election, but to win a reality series time slot. In several emails gained by the Commission between Salcido and the production company, it was discovered that she deliberately stacked the most ''appealing cases'' on those dates so that she could take advantage of the opportunities. The Commission said, in part, ''It creates an appearance of impropriety to represent that you would manipulate your calendar for non-judicial purposes''.

It got worse further into the Commission’s findings. After a defense attorney asked for a continuance for a client who was out of state, and even after the prosecution said it had no problem with it, Salcido destroyed the physician’s letter that explained why travel wasn’t advisable for the defendant. Salcido said she would grant the continuance, but only for discovery reasons and that the physician’s statement had nothing to do with her decision. At that point, she ripped the letter and tossed it into the trash, which of course resulted in a destruction of evidence.

Stories such as these have been well documented and do anything but put the legal profession as a whole in a bad light. Fortunately, she resigned, but not before being called a ''judicial sociopath''.
