Senator Miller to join law firm
U.S. Senator Zell Miller of Georgia will be joining the firm of McKenna Long & Aldridge as a policy advisor. In his new capacity, which begins after his retirement from the Senate, Miller will offer non-legal advice to various clients at the firm's offices in Washington, DC, and Atlanta. Miller, a Democrat, gained some recent prominence last summer by openly backing Republican George W. Bush's reelection bid. Reports from various sources
Intellectual property survey results
The results are in! Howrey Simon Arnold & White won Who Protects IP's annual survey. The survey asks Fortune 250 companies who their primary IP firm is for litigation and patent issues. The results showed that Howrey was cited by 10 of these companies. In second place were Finnegan Henderson Farabow Garrett & Dunner and Kirkland & Ellis, tied with nine each. DLA, Piper Rudnick merge
In a huge merger that will make it the third largest law firm in the world (based upon the number of employed attorneys) Piper Rudnick will merge with DLA, a British firm. It will be the world's only firm with more than 1,000 attorneys each in North America and Europe. The merger will become effective on January 1, 2005. Various sources
Billing rates survey
The National Law Journal's 2004 survey of billing rates shows that billing rates for both partners and associates rose this year. 88 out of 110 firms who participated in the survey said they raised their fees. Firms based in New York and other Northeast cities reported the highest percentages of increases. The National Law Journal, 12/6/04
Two partners join new firm
Friedrich Merz and Peter Gele will join the firm of Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw as partners. Gele was previously with Clifford Chance, and Merz is experienced in tax and finance. They will join Mayer's German office on January 1, 2005. Firm Press Releases
