When an attorney needs to learn more about a particular law, they oftentimes have to look up previous court cases with similar situations that ended with a judgment that the attorney would like to see for his or her case. That case file will then be used as an example of how the law was carried so that a decision may be used in their clients favor. A lot of time will be spent reviewing these case files.

A lot of time will be spent in consultations of possible new clients being charged in a criminal case. These people can be guilty or innocent. Just because someone is being charged for a crime, it does not mean that they are a criminal. Innocent people need an attorney for criminal cases all of the time. Attorneys will likewise spend a lot of time discussing and explaining the law to their client or to update them on the status on their case.

There is also a lot of time where the attorney is collecting evidence, reviewing the evidence, and talking with witnesses. Preparing for the court case can be a complicated and time-consuming matter as there is a lot on the line. Criminal lawyers have to make sure that they are using the law to the best advantage. Sometimes, the witness or the client may be in jail, so many lawyers find themselves spending a lot of time within the walls of the jailhouse in order to conduct interviews needed for the case.

It may appear as though every criminal case makes it before the judge, but that is simply not the case. Sometimes the situation can be resolved because of a plea agreement or when someone drops the charges. If the case does make its way all the way to trial, then the attorney has a lot of work to do. There is the selection of a jury, which means that the attorney will have to take time to interview possible jurors. These decisions and selections are made on the spot in front of the judge as the prosecutor and attorney must try to select the best jurors for the case being brought before the court.

If the criminal lawyer is running a small practice, there is also going to be the hassle of having to mail their own documents, answer phone calls, and send faxes throughout the day. A more established attorney will have a legal secretary for that job which will free up at least a little bit of time throughout the day. A lawyer could spend a lot of the time in the office one day and spend another day in court. The days could be mixed with all sorts of cases or be dedicated to one particularly large case. Every day holds something new in the life of a criminal lawyer. There is a lot of excitement and much to be gained from becoming a lawyer in this field.
