How Does a Mediator Spend a Workday

by Silas Reed
A mediator is a person who works with two different sides of an issue. Many different professions have mediators, so depending on the type of profession that you are going to be working in, you are going to need to be sure that you spend your workday correctly. Since there are so many different types of mediators, the workday that you have is going to be very different.

A mediator is going to work with two different sides on the issues. Most of the time, a mediator is going to work at a place such as a business, where there are clients and customers that need to be kept happy, and where there are employees that need to work with various sides of the business in order to be kept happy as well. If this is the case, then you will be working with the two different sides as a mediator. You will have it as your job to work with the two different sides.

As a mediator, your work day is probably going to start with gathering information from two sides of an issue, depending on where you work and what issues you are working on. You will then gather the information about what both sides have wanted in the past, as well as what they are probably going to be looking for in the future. This is going to be an important part of your workday, because it is going to set up the information that you'll need to have. You will want to be sure that you think through the various parts that each of the sides are going to need, so that when you go into mediation, you have a good idea of what they will both need.

The next part of your day as a mediator is going to include working with both sides. You will probably start by having a meeting with one side – for instance, the group of clients that has a list of wants and needs. You will listen to them, make notes of the things that they have said they need, and pay attention to what they have wanted and what things are going to be important to them in the future. Then, you will probably have a meeting with the other side. Once you get there, you will deliver the information that the first side has told you to the second side, and you will then listen to the things that the second side wants, and the things that are important to them. You will make note of the various things that are important to the second side, and then you will work on mediation.

The next step in your workday is going to be to take your lists of the various wants and needs that both sides want. This might be a time in your day that you are working on your own, because you will have to sit down and see if you can figure out compromises that work for both sides. In this type of job, and working with this type of employment, you will probably want to go into mediation having an idea of what would work for both sides.

The last part of your workday will include meeting with both sides of the issue together, and going through with them what each side wants. Then, you will work with them to help develop a solution that makes both sides as happy as possible. This is what you are going to be doing each day as a mediator.
