How to Apply for the Rhode Island Bar Exam

by Silas Reed

After you have completed your education and have your law school degree or perhaps right before you attain it, you are going to want to make plans to take the Rhode Island Bar Exam, so that you are going to be able to continue with the career that you would most like to have. The first thing that you are going to want to do is look at the Rhode Island Rules belonging to the Supreme Court. These should be Article II—which is Admission of Attorneys and Others to Practice Law. The Rules in question are 1–7. This will help you make sure that you are eligible to take the bar and to become an attorney in Rhode Island. Therefore, make sure that you take your time and look carefully at the requirements, so that you can know for sure that you have passed all of them.

The next thing that you will want to do is download and read through the application form, which you can find on the Rhode Island Supreme Court's website. You want to be sure that you have enough time in your schedule to complete the application before December 1 for the exam in February, and before May 1st for the exam in July.

Next, you will want to complete the entire application. The application is numbered, sections A–D, and they all need to be completed. You want to be sure that you are double checking your answers, for all of the errors or omissions that you might have found. This is very important for you so that you can be sure you have taken all of the time necessary to get all of the right forms filled out and to fully complete the application.

The next thing that you will need to so is to be sure that you have gathered together all of the various forms. These will include a handwriting sample, a criminal background check, employment verification, a credit report, and the two certificates of good moral character. Once you have gathered all of the information together in a packet, you'll need to have your application notarized, as well as to get the Authorization and Release Form notarized as well.

You will want to put your entire application together in a packet that can then be sent in. Remember to include the forms for special testing accommodations, as well as the application fee. Once you have it all together, your application is ready to send in.

Next, you will want to mail the entire application to the Rhode Island Supreme Court Clerk's Office. Be sure that you do so well within the stated deadline, because missing the deadline will not be something that is good for you when it comes to taking the bar exam.

Lastly, you'll need to have the dean of your school complete the Law School Certification, which will verify that you have graduated from law school. You should forward this right to the Rhode Island Committee on Character and Fitness.
