A Walk on the Wild Side

A Walk on the Wild Side
A Walk on the Wild Side
With the monotony of everyday life, many of us desperately search for a way to add a little adventure, a little excitement. If a day at the movies or a trip to the mountains isn't cutting it, I suggest packing your bags and gearing up for the adventure of a lifetime on an African safari. Nothing refreshes the mind and rejuvenates the spirit quite like a trek through the African bush.

While safaris have traditionally been associated with wild game hunting, nowadays the more common form of shooting is done with a camera, not a rifle. One of the premier companies offering photo safaris is Thomson Safaris, located in Tanzania. Their most exclusive package is a 13-day journey through the spectacular Tanzanian terrain, where you'll not only get a chance to see some of the most amazing wildlife in the world, but you will also get personal instruction from renowned adventure and landscape photographer Andy Biggs.

Your trip begins with a journey by Land Rover to Lake Manyara, an epicenter of diverse wildlife including the ever-enchanting flamingoes perching by the water's edge. After a day of snap shots with the Minolta, it's off to Ngorongoro Crater, where you will have a chance to be up close and personal with some of the more popular animals of Africa -elephants, rhinos, zebras, lions and, of course, the oh-so-adorable wildebeests. The sightseeing aboard the Land Rovers is particularly good, since each vehicle is customized with a large roof hatch to provide unobstructed, 360 degree views. And since the animals are somewhat used to occasional visits by their four-wheeled friends, getting close enough to count the stripes on a zebra isn't out of the question.

A Walk on the Wild Side
After several days in the flourishing crater, your fearless guide will lead you west into the plains of the Serengeti, where you will witness cheetahs on the hunt, antelopes and gazelles fighting for survival and herds of meandering elephants. With so much action going on, it may be frustrating not being able to take it all in at once. Since no good safari should ever be filled with frustration (and since you are paying over $7,500 per person), a hot air balloon tour is included in the package. As you soar above the African plains, you will have countless opportunities for breathtaking pictures. Clearly, this is not your ordinary safari.

Sadly, the departure from the Serengeti marks the close of a remarkable adventure. You will leave with lasting memories to tell your children and grandchildren, and your photo albums will be filled with pictures inspired by the awe of nature and perfected by the instruction of a professional photographer. You will certainly take a great deal from this experience and will probably want to bring some of it back to your everyday life. But, be sure not to bring any monkeys home with you as souvenirs. While these creatures may be cute, great with kids, and small enough to fit under the seat in front of you, getting them through customs can be a real hassle. And no one wants a fiasco at the airport.

Keep the memories. Leave the monkeys.
