The all too eventful interview process will be coming for many law students and everyone wants to do their best. After all, you are preparing to be hired and start the rest of your life’s career. Arrive early to the appointment. This gives you some time to review some the notes you prepared about the firm and catch your breath. A late interviewee is not acceptable, so if your school is booking interviews back to back because there are many candidates, try to work something out with the coordinator because rescheduling might not be possible with the firm while on campus.

Answer all questions from the interviewer. Never take any question lightly when the interviewer seems interested enough to ask. If he wants to know who your favorite golfer is this year, talk about it with him even though you may not think it is relevant.

Be an Active Listener. It is important to carefully listen to your interviewer’s questions. It sounds simple but when people have a little anxiety they sometimes don’t completely listen as they are already thinking of the answer in their minds. You need to stay focused on the interview at hand and in the moment. This is a good technique to practice as it comes in handy with clients and judges. People can be offended if they think you are not listening. Listen!

Have your questions prepared to ask. If you are prepared well you will have questions ready about the firm. You should never try to shy away from an interviewer’s question if you don’t understand it. Ask questions because it shows involvement. The interview is a time for the firm to get to know you, but also a time for you to learn more about the firm.

What are your strengths? This is a favorite question for most interviewers to ask in some fashion. Be ready to talk about you strengths during the interview when you get the chance, willingly speak. Always prepare something to talk about, use a story or clever anecdote to emphasize a quality you are particularly glad to share.

What are you’re weaknesses? Think about what you want to say to this question, it’s bound to come up in this interview or the next. It’s a question that can be challenging to answer if you haven’t prepared for it. Phrase your answer carefully with, I think this area is challenging and I need to gear up a little more those situations. Or try, the most challenging area for me in school is …. I look forward to getting more experience with…..

Above all be human in your interview. Overall the firm also wants to be comfortable interacting with you. Show you will be a vivacious and wonderful choice for the firm.
