Young professionals are constantly on the go. Running from the gym to work to a late meeting, you'll need the tools to stay connected. Plus, with a jam-packed schedule, it's difficult at times to enjoy leisure activities. And as a hot, new executive, you need the latest technological accessories to complete the image. But there are so many new gadgets out there. Where do you begin? Not to worry, LawCrossing Weekend has got your back. So read on to learn about the latest electronics and what you need to know before buying.
A staple of any professional's work wardrobe is a PDA. A PDA, which stands for personal digital assistant, can make sense of your busy schedule. The product first appeared in August 1993. At $700 and with a complicated and oftentimes futile handwriting recognition system, the Newton wasn't much of a success and was quickly pulled from shelves. Three years later, the Pilot 1000 and 5000 were introduced and a fad was born. PalmPilots are easy to use and contain features essential to organizing you life and taking care of business. Expect to pay anywhere from less than $100 (for lower-end models) to upwards of $500. The price for a good handheld with essential features is about $200 to $300.
One of the more popular PDAs is the Tungsten E Handheld by palmOne. Selling for a reasonable $199.99, "the sleek and powerful palm Tungsten E Handheld comes packed for business and priced for value," according to compusa.com. Keep track of your calendar and create and work on MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. This all-in-one device also allows you to download and listen to MP3s as well as maintain an album of photos. The color LCD screen is the best of its kind. Forget notebooks, with the Tungsten E Handheld you can check your email while running to catch that plane. PDAs do it all in a convenient compact size.
If you want the absolute latest in electronic technology, then the new video camera cellular phones are for you. Building on the now commonplace camera phones, the new video camera phones allow you to record streaming video for about 30 seconds. Doesn't sound like much? Just wait until you try it. Trent Davidson, who recently bought a VM 4500 by Sanyo video camera phone and is the first of his friends to have one, demonstrated the video feature. The picture is remarkably clear and even records sounds which can be heard loud and clear via the speakerphone. "I was even amazed at how clear the picture and sound is," says Trent. You can opt to send a still picture or video to another phone with video capability or to a PC. You can also upload pictures and video onto your phone. "Because I'm new, in town I've been using the phone to send videos of my new apartment and the city to my family and friends back home."
The video camera phone is a quick and easy way to stay in touch. Or if you're out on the town while your friend is busy finishing a project, you can show them all the fun they are missing by recording the hot new club you're at. This particular model retails for $349.99, but with rebates and web specials, you'll only pay about $169.99. The average price for video camera cellular phones ranges from $250 to $400, but with the purchase of a phone plan, you are likely to get a price cut. Video camera phones are the way to go if you want to be up on the latest thing.
Speaking of the latest things, you might want to check out the new Sony VAIO Pocket Digital Music Player VGF-APIL. The Sony VAIO Pocket is so new it isn't even in stores yet, and when it is, you'll be hard pressed to find one. The Sony VAIO pocket is a response to Macintosh's iPod. Although the VAIO Pocket weighs more than the iPod (195 grams compared to 158 grams, respectively) the VAIO Pocket is packed with more features. The obvious difference is VAIO Pocket's color LCD touch screen. The 2.2" screen plus the 20-hour battery life is sure to be appealing. You can store music, pictures, and data on the 40-GB hard drive. It can store up to 26,000 tracks and is compatible with Sony's Connect Online Music Service. The $499.99 price tag might seem steep, but if you buy the VAIO Pocket via sonystyle.com, you can pay monthly installments and have it shipped overnight for free. Even though the Sony VAIO Pocket is pricey, Sony definitely accommodates the budget-conscious consumer and makes the latest in MP3 technology accessible to professionals just beginning their careers.
Now that you've gotten some specs and ballpark prices for these gizmos, go to your local electronics store and check them out. On Monday you can walk into the office cool and confident with all your schedules stored in your new handheld, listening to MP3s on your new Pocket and show off your new video camera phone. You'll be the trendiest, and most technologically advanced, person in the whole office.
