Well, it seems that James Phipps got slightly upset with his 20-year-old daughter the other day. In fact, he got so upset that he took her over his knee and spanked her — not something that normally happens once you are over 18. Why did he do this? His daughter had just run up a $5,000 cell phone bill. No, that’s not a typo — five thousand dollars. And apparently, Phipps is on the hook to pay it, though that is apparently under dispute. The daughter went upstairs to call her boyfriend, another scuffle broke out, and somehow the daughter ended up with Phipps cell phone instead. Now, she’s allegedly been barred from the home by court order.

Meanwhile, she called the cops to report the so-called abuse, and James Phipps has been charged criminally.

Now, Phipps isn’t just your common, everyday briefcase-wielding BigLaw type. He is the chief executive officer of Maine’s ''Iris Network.'' The Iris Network is a nonprofit that works with visually impaired and blind people to help them become independent. Phipps himself is blind.

The Iris Network has said they don’t know how this charge will impact Phipps’ running of the show.

But a couple of questions do arise. If he’s running an organization to help people become independent, why is he paying for his 20-year-old daughter’s cell phone bill? And just how can you run up a $5,000 phone bill anyway?

And then there’s the question that makes this into an intriguing story: Was Phipps right to spank the young woman?

Corporal punishment is, of course, controversial, though it appears to be settled that parents can use some form of corporal punishment in most states. In other states, however, they can’t. Maine itself does allow parents to use corporal punishment, although it is typically not allowed in the state’s schools.

But beyond the legalities, should a parent be allowed to physically discipline a child who is of age for particularly egregious behavior? That’s the interesting question. Running up your parents’ cell bill to the tune of $5,000 is something most parents would not approve of, nor feel any qualms about imposing rather severe forms of punishment for.

But spanking a 20-year-old? Shades of ''icky.''

The debate rages on!
