LawCrossing: December Ends a Record Year of Continued Growth and Prosperity in the Legal Careers Sector

Based on data compiled over the last 12 months and the latest statistics for the month of December, the legal job market is showing no signs of slowing down. In what some legal experts are calling a year of unprecedented growth, nearly all legal job sectors have shown steady expansion. The numbers reflect growth in the availability of law firm, in-house, and government positions. The only exception in terms of growth was the legal administration sector, in which the total number of positions declined by 60% this year. Overall, however, growth in the legal industry has been very significant. In the field of information technology alone, the number of jobs was up by a record 177%. Other growing sectors include the marketing sector, which saw an 84% increase in jobs, and the paralegal sector, which saw a modest but solid 21% increase in jobs over the course of the year.

CEO of LawCrossing Harrison Barnes cautions, "We are pleased with the rise in legal positions; however, the amount of jobs available in the year does not mean getting a position. That is why we offer our services at LawCrossing—so we can assist our members in finding the positions that are right for them."

In a comparison with last month's data, the total number of law firm jobs in the Northeast had increased from 2,479 to 2,490. The region saw a decline in its number of government positions last month but recovered in December; its data for December showed a total of 208 available government positions. The Mid-Atlantic region saw an increase of 45 law firm jobs. The number of in-house positions in the region increased by 26, and the number of government positions increased by 27.

Data for the South reflected significant expansion, as the region added 350 law firm jobs, seven in-house jobs, and 73 government jobs. In the Midwest, there was a large jump in the total number of positions this month, as compared to the total number last month; this region saw an increase of 70 law firm jobs, an increase of 97 in-house jobs, and an increase of 148 government jobs. The Southwest saw a slight decrease in its total number of jobs, as it lost 28 law firm positions despite increases in its numbers of in-house and government positions. The West showed a modest but steady increase in its total number of jobs, adding 55 law firm positions, 66 jobs in the in-house sector, and 35 jobs in the government sector.

LawCrossing's team of 200 researchers and editorial staff monitors the hiring trends of more than 1.2 million legal employers. With more than 50,000 U.S. legal jobs in its database, LawCrossing counts tens of thousands of law students, attorneys, and legal staff professionals as members.
