DU Law School Clinic Files Lawsuit
It's time for University of Denver law students to get to work. The University of Denver Sturm College of Law Student Law Office filed suit recently in federal court against the U.S. government. The office is representing inmate Tommy Silverstein, 55, who has spent the last 24 years in solitary confinement. It is alleging that the confinement Silverstein had to go through was "unconstitutional cruel and unusual punishment." In prison since 1975, Silverstein went into solitary confinement, which allows no human contact and requires life in a soundproof cell, in 1983. He was convicted of killing two inmates and a guard while he was in prison, and he was transported to the government's Administrative Maximum facility, also known as "Supermax" in Florence, CO. DU's law clinic is a year-long class where students represent clients in a variety of matters under the supervision of faculty.

Stetson to Host Arbitration Competition
Stetson University College of Law's Gulfport campus will host two winning Stetson Law teams and others for the American Bar Association Law Student Division National Arbitration Competition. The competition will take place in January 2008. Twelve teams competed at the regional competition at the University of Oklahoma College of Law on November 12. Last year, a team of Stetson students won the ABA Law Student Division National Arbitration Competition in Austin, TX.

$7 Million Given to North Carolina Law and Medical Students
Wake Forest University in North Carolina is getting an early Christmas present this year. The school's law and medical departments are receiving more than $7 million from the estate of a former Wake Forest University and medical school student. Dr. Ralph Wingate Bland, a Wake Forest graduate, practiced medicine in Goldsboro, NC, for 33 years. The money will be split down the middle between Wake Forest's School of Law and School of Medicine. Support scholarships will be awarded for fall 2008, so students will see the benefits quickly. This will help the School of Law with its scholarship efforts as well and reward talented students relying on such funds. Bland passed away in 2006.
