Freeport-McMoRan hires new GC

The world's largest publicly traded copper company, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., hired Richards McMillan II as its new senior vice president and general counsel. McMillan, who replaces S. David Colton, joins Freeport after working 30 years at law firm Jones, Walker, Waechter, Poitevent, Carrere & Denegre, LLP. He received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University and his J.D. from Tulane University Law School.

Mylan Inc. hires new GC
Mylan Inc., one of the world's leading quality generic and specialty pharmaceutical companies, hired Joseph F. Haggerty as its new senior vice president and global general counsel. Haggerty, who received both his J.D. and B.A. from St. John's University, brings 23 years of litigation, commercial, and regulatory experience and 14 years of pharmaceutical experience to Mylan. In the past, Haggerty has served as vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary for Sanofi-Aventis U.S. Inc., vice president and general counsel for U.S. commercial operations at Aventis Pharmaceuticals, and head of the product liability group at Warner-Lambert Company. Of his new position, Haggerty said, "I am thrilled to be joining Mylan at this exciting time in the company's history."

Former Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia GC joins Davis Wright
Leaving his position as general counsel for Martha Stewart Living, John R. Cuti now joins Davis Wright Tremaine as a litigation partner. Cuti, who briefly served as general counsel at MortgageIT Holdings, has also worked in compliance at companies including Macy's, Lowe's, and 1-800-Flowers. He helped defend Stewart in her 2004 trial where she was convicted of "obstructing justice and lying to authorities investigating suspected insider-trading activities."

VeraSun Energy Corp. hires new GC
VeraSun Energy Corp. hired a new vice president and general counsel, Mark Dickey. Dickey, who has had more than 20 years of legal experience, formerly served as vice president, assistant general counsel, and assistant secretary at Gateway Inc.

Brown-Forman hires new GC
Having recently served as associate general counsel and vice president of law for Enterprise Media Group, Matthew Hamel now joins spirits and wine business Brown-Forman as its new general counsel. Hamel, who will be replacing retiring GC Michael Crutcher, has had more than "21 years of international legal and corporate management experience in technology, consumer goods, and media firms," said Brown-Forman CEO Paul Varga. Varga also said Hamel was an "excellent choice" for the company. Hamel will be responsible for leading Brown-Forman's legal team as well as overseeing its legal activities.
