This week, David Kelley, partner with Cahill, Gordon & Reindel and former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, tells LawCrossing how he landed his first job in the legal industry, paving the way for his successful future in the field.
Kelley, a police officer at the time, became a paralegal for Rudy Giuliani after he met a guest speaker from his criminal law class who was a former police officer who had been corrupted and convicted. This man eventually became a cooperative witness for the government for Giuliani when Giuliani was a prosecutor.
"My law school professor introduced us, knowing that I was a police officer, and thought we'd hit it off, and we did. He said, 'You've got to work for Rudy Giuliani.' He got me an interview, and I became a paralegal," says Kelley.
After law school, once he had left the police department and the U.S. Attorney's Office as a paralegal, Kelley served his clerkship and later returned, seeking the position of Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, which he also landed.
"I think having familiarity with the office and the people there certainly eased my interview process," he says.
