Students who took the bar exam on laptops came close to losing their answers. | "In many cases, students entered their essays on the computer, then complained they could not find them or any evidence that the material had been saved," says an article on www.law.com.
But the president of the software company explained on Wednesday that the backup systems installed had saved the answers from being lost.
The article goes on to say that "Douglas M. Winneg of Software Secure Inc. said in an interview that he believes the essay question answers uploaded from the computers of approximately 5,200 people who used laptops to take the bar exam last week have been accounted for."
And while they "have identified the process by which this problem occurred," and "have identified what buttons caused the problems," they are, "at this point...not sure what the underlying cause is," continued Winneg.
Winneg also apologized on Software Secure's website "'for the issues and the frustrations candidates must have felt' last week."
"I know this made a tough exam more difficult," he wrote.
Students who took the test on a computer will be notified next week about their essays.
Now, "the next step will be printing the essays and having them packaged with students' other answer sheets. The packages will be passed along to the 42 people the board uses to grade the exams," said Diane F. Boss, chairwoman of the New York Board of Law Examiners.
Final results for the bar exam come later this year in mid-November.
