Illegal immigrants may have a hard time getting married. | According to an article on www.newsday.com, "the numbers are not available to illegal immigrants."
Jonadad Luque and his girlfriend, an illegal immigrant, are proof of this. In Nashville, TN, a county clerk would not issue a marriage license to the couple because Luque's girlfriend did not have a Social Security number.
"We want to get married," said Luque in Spanish, "but we'll have to wait until they change the law."
The law, however, has even prevented legal immigrants and some U.S. citizens from getting married in certain places, says the article. Because of this, couples are traveling where they can to find states and counties willing to issue them marriage licenses.
"Illegal immigrants are encountering less trouble getting married in places that have established immigrant communities. In Texas and New York City, for instance, officials ask for Social Security numbers but do not require them," states the article.
