Prof. Rose to present paper on history of English law at Oxford
Professor Jonathan Rose, law faculty at Arizona State University, has received an invitation to deliver a paper on history of English law at the 18th British Legal History Conference, to be held at University of Oxford, July 2-5. With more than a decade's experience in the field, Prof. Rose is a Willard H. Pedrick Distinguished Research Scholar at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at the Arizona State University. At the conference titled Judges and Judging, he will present his paper "The Law of Maintenance: The Judicial Development of the Law." Besides Prof. Rose, several national and international speakers will attempt to trace the history of English law from the medieval era to the present.
Vermont Law School program wins professionalism award
The General Practice Program (GPP) at Vermont Law School has been chosen for the 2007 E. Smythe Gambrell Professionalism Award. The award was tipped in favor of GPP by the Standing Committee on Professionalism of the American Bar Association for its project involving the understanding of professionalism among lawyers. Several law schools, bar associations, law firms, and other law-related organizations competed for the award. Professor Susan B. Apel, director of GPP, expressed extreme satisfaction on being chosen for the award. Elaborating on the achievement, Apel stated that the program aims to infuse in students the significance of professionalism—the ability to adhere to one's highest ethical standards and to carry oneself in a truthful and sincere way in all areas of law practice.
Jefferson Fordham Lifetime Achievement Award for Daniel R. Mandelkar
Daniel R.Mandelker, a Howard A. Stamper Professor of Law, will be honored with the American Bar Association's (ABA) prestigious Jefferson Fordham Lifetime Achievement Award. An indelible stamp of recognition in itself, the award is being accorded in recognition of Mandelkar's exceptional contribution to state and local government laws. Co-sponsored by ABA's section of state and local government law, the 10th annual awards will be given away at ABA's annual meeting, to be held in San Francisco on August 10, 2007. A member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, the professor teaches classes on land use law, state and local government, and environmental and land use litigation. With cutting-edge expertise in land use law, the scholar and teacher has literally ushered in a new era in teaching of environmental and state government laws.Apart from serving as a legal consultant to New Orleans' Bureau of Governmental Research on its post-Katrina planning study, Mandelker is also an associate of joint American Bar Association committee that takes care of the administrative and judicial review process in land use decision-making.
Stetson to organize its 32nd Annual Bankruptcy Law and Practice seminar
Stetson University College of Law will organize the 32nd Annual Alexander L. Paskay Seminar on Bankruptcy Law and Practice on December 7th and 8th. Alexander L. Paskay, chief bankruptcy judge emeritus of the Middle District of Florida and an adjunct professor of law at Stetson, will preside over the seminar. The seminar is designed to meet the needs of both specialists and lay personnel engaged in the practice of the law of bankruptcy, and it has drawn the attention of national faculty, including public figures specializing in bankruptcy law. The seminar subjects will include ethics, recent developments, litigation issues, sovereign immunity, dischargeability, Chapter 11 cases, and small-business cases. Other matters of study and contemplation would include exceptions and extensions to the automatic stay, trustee's voiding powers and case administration, domestic support obligations, and adequate protection payments. The venue for the seminar has been set for the Sheraton Sand Key Resort, Clearwater, FL.
MSW-JD Program commences
The University of Pittsburgh School Of Law has joined hands with the School of Social Work to launch a new joint degree program through which students will concurrently earn both their master's of science in social work (MSW) and juris doctorate (JD) degrees. The MSW-JD program will benefit students with interests in broader areas like child welfare, health, aging, mental health, juvenile and criminal justice, and housing and family law, areas in which most issues have both a legal and a social angle. The course is expected to be a highly integrative educational experience and will provide academic courses, field placements, and research opportunities relating to both degrees. The timetable for the completion of degree is four years. The conception of this new course recognizes the strongly felt need of augmenting legal degrees with degrees in interrelated fields.
