Opinion Website Receives Lawsuit

by Robin Salisian

Opinion Website Receives Lawsuit
Avvo is a website that rates lawyers on a scale of 1 to 10.
The plaintiffs, John Henry Browne and Alan Wenokour, also believe Avvo does not have the right to label lawyers' skills. They may have a point. "In its short history, Avvo has been criticized over the rankings because in some cases law school deans and Supreme Court justices scored lower than lawyers with criminal records," says the same article.

And yet Avvo's ratings are opinions. "And those opinions," the article goes on to say, "are protected by the First Amendment."

Chief Executive of Avvo, Mark Britton, who is asking a federal judge to dismiss the lawsuit because of the protection of the First Amendment, stands by his ratings although he has made some changes to the site. Lawyers with limited information will no longer receive a numerical rating. And instead, they will receive an "attention rating if [Avvo] detects any disciplinary action against lawyer[s] that [are] not counterbalanced by positive information," states an article on seattletimes.nwsource.com. "If there are no red flags, Avvo will [then] post a 'No Concern' rating."

Avvo seeks to provide customers with, according to its website, "profiles for every attorney in the state, with information including experience practicing law, disciplinary sanctions, professional achievements, and client ratings."
