Fordham Law's CLIP acquires major research contract
Fordham Law School's Center on Law and Information Policy (CLIP) will be the U.S. partner in a global consortium undertaking a study of electronic communications. The study, "Comparison of Privacy and Trust Policies in Electronic Communications," will be conducted for the European Commission and will examine mechanisms and issues underlying electronic communications. The study's results will aid in the gathering of information for better policymaking. Fordham's law center will provide an analysis of U.S. law under the direction of Professor Joel R. Reidenberg, who is also the founding director of CLIP. The project's principal investigators include WIK-Consult of Germany and RAND Europe of Cambridge, England. Other members of the research team include the Centre de Recherche en Informatique et Droit at the Universite de Namur in Belgium and GLOCOM in Japan.
Minnesota Law School Workers' Rights Clinic prevails upon motion
The Rights Clinic of the University of Minnesota Law School Workers was successful in prevailing upon a motion in a sex discrimination case of Mitchell v. American Crystal Sugar. Clinical Professor Lisa C. Stratton led the clinic, which consisted of student director Darren Sharp, Geneva Finn, Sarah Schwenker (all class of 2007), Chris Amundsen, and Lauren Wood (both class of 2008). Now the case will proceed to trial in federal court. Professor Stratton is an expert on discrimination and hostility towards women in nontraditional jobs. The clinic's students under Stratton's guidance spent weeks compiling statements and writing a compelling defending brief based on the statements of witnesses.
Yochai Benkler joins Harvard Law School as faculty
Professor Yochai Benkler '94 has joined Harvard Law School as faculty. He specializes in information law and policy, communications law, and intellectual property. In the past four academic years, HLS has recruited 20, including Benkler, tenured or tenure-track professors. Dean Elena Kagan, describing Yochai Benkler as a "pathbreaking scholar," said that his works defy the existing conception about the way society controls ideas and information. Author of several scholarly articles, Benkler is well-known for his study on how information technology is transforming the socio-economic scenario by forging communities not linked by proximity. In his paper titled "Coase's Penguin," he created the term "commons-based peer production" which is used to describe those projects created by digital technology, or open-source software.
Elon Law School gets a new director of communications
Elon University School of Law in Greensboro has appointed David Hibbard as its director of communications. Hibbard will look after the law school's communications matters, including media relations, print publications, and the school's website. Handling the university's news bureau since 2000 as director, Hibbard is well versed with the local and regional media relations, penning stories for its publications and promoting the students' and faculties' work. The University Poll results were also publicized by him. The results appeared in many national media outlets as the CNN, the Washington Post, and the San Francisco Chronicle. In his tenure at the university, Hibbard has been associated with the teams that won awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for effective media relations and publications programs. He has also served as staff liaison to Elon's National Alumni Executive Board's communications committee.
