The Legal Assistant Program at Rose State College in Midwest City, OK
By Judith Earley
The original name of Rose State College was Oscar Rose Junior College. It was thus named in memory of a Midwest City-Del City superintendent of schools. The school opened its doors on September 21, 1970.
Renamed on November 1, 1983, the college was approved by its board of trustees and became a member of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education in December 1973. Over the years, enrollment has increased from 1,700 to 8,200 housed in 21 buildings on approximately 116 acres of land.
Rose State College is an open-admission, associate degree-granting college created to provide all-inclusive lower-division education and thriving community-services programs. According to the Rose State College website, the values that guide institutional philosophy, operation, and planning are:
Learning: The institution is a learning-centered environment where students will be afforded ample opportunity to succeed in meeting their educational goals as partners in the pedagogical process.
Excellence: The institution makes a commitment to internal and external constituents to make each program and service one of excellence by establishing high standards that sustain and promote higher education in an innovative, learning-centered environment.
Integrity: The institution maintains fair, honest, accurate, and consistent policies and procedures monitored by measures of institutional effectiveness to ensure credible actions are taken to further a diverse learning-centered environment of individuality and collegiality.
Service: Through teamwork on campus and in partnership with the communities served, the institution strives to improve the quality of life in an urban setting by offering programs and services based on the needs of students and citizens and designed for measurably improving the aesthetic, physical, economic, social, political, and intellectual environment.
After close examination, it was determined that a need for legal assistants existed in Oklahoma and that professional training programs should be developed.
The first legal assistant program in the state of Oklahoma was opened at Rose State College under the guidance of the Oklahoma Bar Association and the Oklahoma County Bar Association. The RSC legal assistant program has been approved by the American Bar Association since 1976. It is also a member of the American Association for Paralegal Education.
Designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in positions as legal assistants or paralegals, the RSC legal assistant program is a two-year program offering both day and evening classes for the convenience of both traditional students and second-career adult learners.
The RSC program offers an Associate of Applied Science, Legal Assistant. It is not geared toward students who wish to continue their educations by attending law school.
