An important watercolor painting by Paul Cezanne, Nature morte au melon vert is estimated to sell for between $14 million and $18 million. The painting was completed between 1902 and 1906 and is being sold by the premier connoisseur of Chinese art, Giuseppe Eskenazi. He has had it in his private collection for almost 20 years.

Nature morte au melon vert exemplifies one of Cezanne's best-known genres: the still life. This will be the third time Sotheby's has offered this work for sale. The first sale occurred in 1978, when the painting was part of the Robert von Hirsch collection. The second sale occurred in 1989, at which point it was part of the British Rail Pension Fund. Mr. Eskenazi is also offering for sale three other watercolors by Cezanne depicting scenes of Provence.

A Rose Period painting by Pablo Picasso entitled Tête d'arlequin will be offered for sale, as well. Tête d'arlequin was painted in 1905 and is one in a series of eight portraits of an anonymous adolescent boy. He was the same model used for Picasso's Garçon à la Pipe. Sotheby's sold that piece for $104.2 million in 2004.

A few other pieces, both canvas and sculpture, by Picasso will be offered. Also executed in 1905, Picasso's Famille d'arlequin is estimated to sell for $6 million to $8 million. The scene is dominated by images of family groups, but unlike Tête d'arlequin, Famille d'arlequin was inspired by the artist's fascination with harlequins, acrobats, actors, and circus performers. Famille d'arlequin reflects an atmosphere of warmth and family closeness.

Other featured items include works by artists Joan Miro, Alberto Giacometti, Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Leger, Marc Chagall, Marino Marini, Lyonel Feininger, and Wassily Kandinsky, to name a few.
