Sigmund Libowitz had recurring roles on The Sopranos and Law and Order. He is now a 3L at the University of Maryland School of Law.
"Having worked in the real world, having worked on deals, and having done so much negotiation, to seal them, you have to understand the power of words and the secret language of the law and how it all interconnects," he said. "I got tired of 'Okay, we have to turn it over to the lawyers now.' I wanted to be in the room."

When illnesses in his extended family and his wife's family necessitated relocating to the East Coast, Libowitz again turned his thoughts toward attending law school.

"The idea of law school always stayed with me," he said. "Then I got a scholarship, and that sealed the deal."

Libowitz is married and has a two-year-old daughter.
Planning to practice in the field of entertainment law, Libowitz has also developed an interest in homeland security law and serves as a research assistant for the school's Center for Health and Homeland Security, where he researches Constitutional issues regarding enemy-combatant arrests and detainments.

"What is so interesting about this kind of law is that it is a whole new field of law. It is being written now," Libowitz said. "What are the issues? What does 'War on Terror' mean? It is an incredibly interesting field of law."

Libowitz is also a member of the school's National Trial Team, which won team and individual national championships at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy's 17th Annual Tournament of Champions in October. What he enjoys most about studying law is legal history.

On The Sopranos, Libowitz played a Hassidic Jew.
"I like learning, and I like legal history and the way laws are built upon other laws," Libowitz said. "In law school, you take a long-term view of things. I like seeing what the underpinnings are."

Libowitz lives with his wife and their two-year-old daughter. His Hollywood credits include a recurring role as a Hassidic Jew on The Sopranos and a recurring role as a young public defender on Law and Order. He was also the production executive for the award-winning film In the Bedroom and was vice president of acquisitions and co-productions at Paramount Studios before attending law school.
