<<"I had always been interested in the military since I was a kid," Jo said. "Most of the male members of my extended family have been in the military because Korea requires two years of service."

"My father was a captain in the ROK (Republic of Korea) army and also enlisted in the U.S. Army. My uncle is a retired two-star general of the ROK army. Not only was there the family influence, but I had always wanted to do things that most people didn't and especially what most women didn't do; West Point was a natural choice for me."

"I think it was a combination of wanting a challenge and exercising my rights as an American woman," Jo added. "I realized that I was very lucky to be born in America and that in most countries around the world, women were not allowed to do many things by law or by societal pressures."

Jo's sister, Elissa Jo, now 26, spent a year in the hospital and was faced with significant challenges in overcoming red tape in order to finish high school and obtain required medical care. Attorneys hired to lobby for her Individualized Education Plan were instrumental in getting the help she needed and in inspiring Jo to follow in their footsteps.

"I became more interested in what they were doing than the work I was doing at the time," Jo said. "I also was so impressed with how much they could do and change with the 'power' and skills they had as attorneys. I realized quickly that with knowledge of the law came greater tools to help my family, other people, and foster change."

Now a second-year student at Loyola Law School, Jo would like to be defense counsel for death penalty cases after graduation, saying she is "drawn to the stakes" in criminal law.

"What started out as a frustration for me has become a wonderful intellectual challenge that I welcome and enjoy: the 'grayness' of the law," Jo said. "The answer of 'it depends' used to frustrate me during my first year, but now has become a source of both a powerful weapon and a challenge to overcome. The interpretation of the law is always changing, and I feel like I learn something new everyday."

<<In addition to her studies and family responsibilities, Jo founded the Elli Jo Art Project, a non-profit art show which raises money to assist disabled individuals and their families. She also collaborated to create the Kindergarten Reading Program at Loyola, a program that encourages children from the neighborhood to see that law school is accessible to them as well, no matter what their socio-economic backgrounds are. The kindergartners visit Loyola every two weeks and Loyola students read to them, sometimes in the Student Lounge.
