Attorney Suicide Pact

Attorney Suicide Pact
Attorney Suicide Pact
Vaught and his wife were found in a car in their garage.
Last week, a Hickory, NC, attorney, Curt Vaught, contributed to that statistic, killing himself in an apparent suicide pact with his wife, Mary. The couple was found dead in their car in the garage. Friends of the couple reported that Vaught's wife had been sick for some time and also that he had been having financial problems.

Obviously, no one can be sure as to the reasoning behind the suicides. However, many people draw the conclusion that because of his wife's illness, Vaught decided that he wanted the two of them to go together.

Stephanie Gilliam, a paralegal at Curt J. Vaught and Associates, told the Hickory Daily Record that Vaught loved his wife more than anything and compared the suicide pact to a Romeo and Juliet ending.

"They couldn't live without each other," she said. "His biggest enjoyment in life was making her happy."

Sheriff David Huffman, who is investigating the case, told the Hickory Daily Record that the couple left a note, but did not give any more details about the note. Vaught, a former Marine, was 60 years old. He met his wife while he was an undergrad at North Carolina State University, and the two became husband and wife in 1972. Vaught later attended Wake Forest University, where he graduated with his J.D. degree. The couple had no children.
