Ranked as one of the top health law programs in the country, the Health Law Institute allows students to earn a certificate that, according to the website, "provides law students, healthcare professionals, and non-degree-seeking attorneys with a solid health law education." Students enrolled in the program take classes in health policy and the law, healthcare law regulation, medical sociology, law and medicine, and mental health law, just to name a few topics of study.
DePaul's college of law is also renowned for its intellectual property law programs. Students can earn one of four certificates in information technology law, arts and museum law, patents, and general intellectual property law. Other certificate programs cover public interest, criminal, family, international and comparative, and taxation law.
The school offers the Chiapas Practicum, a one-of-a-kind human rights practicum. Students who participate in the summer program work side-by-side with Mexican human rights lawyers at human rights offices in Chiapas, Mexico. The summer program is conducted entirely in Spanish and is open to 1Ls and 2Ls who meet semi-weekly during their second semesters in order to prepare for their trip. A 10-day program is available as well, during which students get to observe the local conditions. Other study-abroad programs available to students include the Asian Legal Studies Institute, the Human Rights Law in the United States program, and a program at University College Dublin.
There are numbers of organizations and journals with which students can get involved. Student-run organizations include Amnesty International, the Business Law Society, the Evening Law Students Society, Outlaws, and the National Lawyers Guild. The student-run journals on campus are the DePaul Law Review, DePaul Business and Commercial Law Journal, DePaul Journal of Sports Law and Contemporary Problems, DePaul Health Law Journal, and DePaul Journal of Art and Entertainment Law.
The class of 2005 reported a 97% employment rate within nine months of graduation. Starting salaries ranged from $28,000 to $130,000, with the average starting salary in the private sector being $76,542. The school, which is located on DePaul's Chicago Loop Campus, is down the street from federal, state, city, and county courts. Due to its strategic location, the school has forged lasting connections that benefit its students.
According to the school's admissions brochure, more than 8,500 of the 14,000 DePaul law school graduates are currently working in the Chicago area. Notable alumni include Richard Daley (the current mayor of Chicago), Samuel Skinner (former U.S. Treasury Secretary and Chief of Staff), and Benjamin L. Hooks (former executive director of the NAACP).
DePaul University is a private university affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. It is the largest Catholic university and one of the 10 largest private universities in the country.
